Universal ATF

Hey all,

I have been using Motorcraft Mercon V fluid in my Ford Mustang 4R70W auto since new. I have recently been looking for a fully synthetic alternative. Seems though the only full synthetics that meet the Mercon V spec are "universal" ATF fluids that meet many different manufacturer's specs. Would I be better of sticking with the Motorcraft Mercon V? My thinking, and I am probably wrong, is that these universal formulas are going to have some compromises in order to meet so many different specs. Am I off base?

MerconV is an excellent blended synthetic fluid.

Redline/Amsoil make Full Synthetic ATFs that can be used.

Don't use the word "universal". Think of the synthetic ATFs as a fluid that exceeds the requirement of all the other ATFs. Compromise is what OEMs do!

Regardless of what ATF you chose, practive sane fluid replacements, add external filtration, and upgrade the oil cooler.

personally, unless dexron is reccomended, I stick with OEM fluid.

Mercon is like dexron: almost universally formulated to the correc spec.

I dont like universal ATF because it seems to me that its always a compromise.

Id try to find an explicitly stated synthetic mercon V ATF.

Maybe a Dexron III (or IIIH or IV)/Mercon V fluid.

I wouldnt want it too universal.
