Okay, I've been considering a Full Synthetic ATF...

I've seen some good deals on M1 and Wolf's Head Full Synthetic ATF for all cars.

Now, I've heard some issues with shifting issues in newer cars with Mobil 1 ATF......

Since my car requires Dex VI, would I have any issues like that? (Cobalt, auto)

Or would it just be better to just stick with dex VI?

I thought you were happy with the ST Dex VI? Stick to Dex VI especially if your car specs it. I have only ever had bad luck with Mobil 1 ATF. And I like there motor oil so its not a brand thing.

If considering a Full Synthetic Dex VI I would go either RL D6 ( have used it in several GMs and Yotas with exceptional results) Amsoil ATL or Valvoline Dex VI.

Yeah, I was considering the ST Dex VI(even had a few bottles) until I found Mobil Dex VI (blend too) cheaper. So I picked up a case of that for the upcoming ATF change.

I guess I got excited about the deal, I guess.

I suppose I could pick it up for one of the Cavs (that run Dex III) if I wanted to.

I see. The ST Dex VI is shifting 100 times better in my dads silverado. Just perfromed a flush last night. Ran a bit short, so it's not all ST, four quarts of Valvoline Dex VI. He is very happy with how the truck is shifting after having worn out Dex III in there. Later I might change it over to RL D6 cause Im anal, but for now Im very happy with the ST. Good stuff indeed.

If you require DexronVI, then you need it or an equivalent like Redline D6, Amsoil ATL, or the Amalie clones since they are all blended thinner then DexronIII.

If you require DexronIII, you can use any full synthetic equivalent or Dexron VI.

Dex-VI only in GM Hydramatic transmissions that were originally spec'ed for Dex-II, Dex-III, or Dex-VI (and certain GM Allison transmissions). No Dex-VI in non-GM transmissions.

For your Cobalt, use any Dexron-VI ATF. The spec is tighter than older ATFs, and any brand will do fine. The performance required in the spec an only be met with a syn-blend or better base oil. One of the more expensive Full Synthetic Dex-VI compatible fluids will probably live longer in severe service than the cheaper stuff...or maybe both will do well.

So it looks like both M1 and WH are out for the Balt for sure...

I think with the Cav I will do a simple Dex VI upgrade....

Mobil 1 ATF has worked great for me since Mobil started making Mobil 1 ATF way back when. I never had a failure in transmissions or PS pumps with some transmissions going well over 200,000 miles. I also noticed that cold morning shifting was excellant with little or no change with shift points compared to warmer weather. Every transmission I changed to with their oil has shifter better, up and down. That's just my 20 year experience with Mobil 1 ATF.

I dont think he is saying that Mobil 1 ATF isn't a good product, just that his car requires Dexron VI and that if he can he would like to run one fluid in both, as Dex VI is back spec'd to work in his other vehicle.

After re- reading the post the Mobil 1 ATF is not the best ATF for your transmission. Go with the semi synt Dex VI. Here's a link.
Sorry for the confusion.

You're fine. You were trying to help.

Already picked up a case of that for the Balt....

My 02' Buick runs excellent on Mobil 1 ATF. I changed the factory fluid and filter at 36K and ran the Mobil 1 till 96K when I changed it again using Mobil 1. I plan on running it to 160K. Both times I added a bottle of Lubegard red. If I decide to run Dex VI next time will it mix OK with the residual Mobil 1 or is a flush REQUIRED?

You will be fine draining it if that's all you want to do. No ill effect will be noted. But consider that very little of the benefit provided by the DEXRON VI will be reeped due to dillution.

The best approach when changing from one spec atf to another newer one is to perform a cooler line flush/Exchange.

Yep, that happened once and will happen again when I upgrade the wife's car...

Both times that I changed my ATF (pan drop and new filter) I was able to drain about 8 quarts of the 10 quart total. I would expect to have approximately 80% Dexron VI if I go that route. I wasn't sure if the 20% Mobil 1 Dexron IIIH remaining would cause a problem. So it's safe to say that Dex VI and Dex IIIH can be mixed?

Yes you can mix dex VI and III without issue. If you are getting 8 quarts out and have a total capacity of ten that is not common for most vehicles but nice for you as you could dump it and be good to go.

I still like to flush every little last trace of fluid I can out, so for me cooler line exchange every time.
