The water pump on my car shat the bed a couple days ago. Replacing it necessitated removing the valve cover, so I figured I'd take a few pictures and post them for anyone who might like to take a peak. As mentioned in the thread title, it's a '95 Accord EX, so it has the VTEC engine. It's got just shy of 181,000 miles on it and the current oil has been run about 6,300 miles.

Aside from a tiny bit of varnish [amounting to nothing], it looks great for 181K miles!

For the bulk of its life it got Castrol GTX and 5k mile OCIs. There was a stretch of several years where it didn't see much use, but then I took primary control of the car about 35k miles ago. I've done UOAs on every change since then, the last one being about eight months ago.

Heavy varnish, no sludge. I don't like varnish, but may not effect the performance of the engine much.

I know it's really easy to strip those bolts on the Valve Cover, I think the spec is like 12-15 inch pounds of torque.

I need to remove mine in order to see down the Upper Timing cover to see where fluid is leaking from. Crossing fingers that I don't strip those bolts!

So, anyway, I'll take pictures of my valvetrain area as well.

I wonder what something like Pennzoil Ultra could do for making that look even cleaner, nice pics though!

Looked under the valve cover on my 97 Accord 4 cylinder (with 148K miles) a few weeks ago and it looked very similar to yours with a golden layer of varnish and no sludge. Similar oil history too with Castrol GTX 5W-30 and 5K OCI. Just recently switched over to Mobile Super HM.

Check out those nooks and crannies.
Also take a look at the surface of the bearing surfaces.

It's all clean and looking very good.

It makes me want to go pull the valve covers of my 2002 Ford Taurus!

Nice. You've got me by a few miles, so it will be interesting to see your pics.

And, indeed, I'll be using Pennzoil Ultra on the next change and probably future changes as well. I've already used it in two of our cars with excellent results, so I'm just going to switch the fleet to it. I don't think I'll be removing the valve cover again any time soon, though. heh

Meh, wait until you need to replace the timing belt again after several OCIs on Ultra THAT will be interesting.

I need to visit a friend with a torque wrench to re-do those valve cover bolts. I'm a learning mech, not a real one as of now!

Don't wanna strip those things! I do want to get one, especially for that + for the adjustments on the valve lash, which according to the manual needs to be done every 15,000 miles for the VX model!!!

As for the pics, I'm not expecting anything too 'great', since I just started owning the car about 30,000 miles ago. Did about 10,000 on Valvoline MaxLife(divided into 3 OCIs from 3,000-3,750), with a few idle flushes. Mobil 1 AFE 0w-30 for 4,000. Then Amsoil SSO 0w-30 for 5,000; shorter for cleanup purpoes. Then MMO + T6 for 3,000 miles as another 'method of cleansing'.

My insols went up slightly on the MMO/T6 combo, so I was happy to see that crud was actually being suspended. Now, the VX just finished 8,000+ miles on Amsoil AZO 0w-30 with some Val MaxLife as top-up for the last 1,000(ran out of Amsoil). Going to sample Ultra at 7,500 and see where I stand compared to the Amsoil at 5,000 miles tests I've done so far(3 UOAs in total).

I lose about 1 quart every 3,000-4,000 miles. Just had the rear main replaced with clutch job, though, yet to see how that changes consumption rate.

Anyway, I suppose I've taken 'moderate' cleanup attempts. Everything short of a piston soak and Kreen use(might do that anyway, lol).

I did another 'idle before oil change' flush before I dropped that last fill of Amsoil. I used Lubro Moly's Pro Line Engine Flush. No deposits or granny crud in the drain old oil, nice/fast drain + no crud while pouring up for disposal = about as clean as I can get without manual cleaning.

Wish I would of took a pic of my dads 93 accord with 180k on conventional oil changes valve train when I removed the rocker arm assembly, looked very similar to yours with a nice coat of varnish, its running ultra now so we'll see what it can do.

Wow there are a few members here that would tell you Castrol could never keep an engine that sludge free, one in particular comes to mind, but I won't mention any names

LOL. The proof is in the pics, Castrol did just fine!!

Thats not what I'm reading here. He said Castrol the bulk of its life. Starting 35k ago he has used MMO, posted a Shell Rotella T-5 UOA which indicates a change in oil. The condition at the time of Castrol is not represented in those pictures.

This is from my 97 Accord with 148K miles and fed with a steady diet of Castrol GTX 5W-30 until about 5K miles ago when I switched to Mobile Super HM.

That's how our F22 looked as well.

Pretty nice - congratulations for the good maintenance!
Just one remark: did you check the sump and pick-up tube strainer? Should be the next step...
See my valve cover before an after cleaning @ 192,000 miles (12 years SAAB 95 2.0t):
