Ultra 5W-30 or 10W-30

Asking for your advice, I'm currently running 10w30 P-Ultra and plan to do an OCI this weekend, I originally wanted to to run 5w30 (service manual recommendation) at my last OCI but at the time Walmart was out so in went the 10w30.

So my question is it seems maybe the addpack might be better for the 5w30 since in all of Pennzoil's marketing the tests were all performed with 5w30 or do companies typically have the same add-pack for all weights within a model range of oil?

Should I stick with 10w30 here in AZ for the summer?

both are going to be great, but I think the reason they used 5w30 is because 1)that is the standard for testing procedure in all of these bench tests, 2)almost every oil is available in that grade, and 3)it is the most widely used grade(i believe)

In Phoenix, I doubt that it would make any difference.

I'd research the add. pack. E.g., Shell Rotella 5W-40 meets more specifications than Shell Rotella 10w30, and I can only imagine that is b/c of the add. package.

If you're talking about T5 vs T6 then you're comparing a semi-syn to a synthetic.

I would run the weight that it calls for in your OM, especially under warranty like you are.

What does the Oil filler cap state?

I know my Kia Optima "Owner's Manual" called for nearly ANYTHING as per the manual....lol. They simply had a chart, of what oil should be used at what temperatures, and then the grade and spec that the oil must meet for warranty purposes (API SL, ILSAC GF-4, etc....).

I'm willing to bet it would be similar in your vehicle. I'd say the 10w30 should be OK....but the manufacturer knows best. I know I ran 10w30 in my Optima, oil filler cap called for 5W-20, dealer always serviced it with 5w30 (what they had on tap) and they said it wouldn't make a difference (except maybe a cpl MPG points....)


As far as the ad pack - may be a question to pose to SOPUS/Pennzoil

I talked to Pennzoil the other day. My truck calls for 5w30 so they said that would be the optimum grade if the temperature is under 100*F. If it gets up around or over 100*F then 10w30 is recommended by them.

It would seem to me that in the summer 10w30 is no better at protection than 5w30, only in colder temperatures would 5w30 have an advantage.

I'm only asking if the add pack is different between the two weights.

Only difference is the viscosity. They use the same additive package.

You can run xW40 in the hot Phoenix summer and your car would not perform any differences. 10W30 in place of 5W30 in summer is perfectly fine for any place in US. My '94 LS400 recommended 5W30, it had 5W30, 10W30, 15W40 and 5W20. I could not feel any different between xW30 and xW40, but I think the car was smoother and quieter with 5W20.

I'm actually having this same debate. I'm about to go back to San Diego and then on some very long highway trips in warm climates. Then going back to Flagstaff where it will be warm again too. Probably will got around 7-8000 miles on the next OCI, but I don't know if 5w30 or 10w30 would be better. I was thinking 10w30...

I would think their would be no advantage between the two in the heat, only that 5w30 will flow better a lower temperatures, at higher temps both will be equal.
