UAW would own majority of chrysler

Now why don't you run it!

That's a new definition of organized labor! This is starting to remind me of some of the destabilization that happens in South American countries when companies pull out (Costa Rica, Argentina, Brazil and a few others). Essentially if the company quits on you (Chapter 7) the workers keep coming to work self organized and essentially bring the business back on sweat equity. Sometimes they are successful...other times not so much.

I tried to get this type of "mutualism" started at my last job. Productivity bonuses in lieu of overtime (the traditional form of profit sharing in manufacturing - we make more- you make more - but we own you for it to happen). We did get stock purchase plans ..but it took so long to get it through the red tape, the biggest gains were in the past. The stuff split 2:1 and 3:2 in the 3 years that it took. As the company suffers ..so do the workers. That sounds so commie

Hey now Gary, Commie is vogue so don't be rocking the boat!! Seriously though I have worked with a large number of corporations that would have performed better if the 400 layers of inept management were to be paired down to say 3. The shareholders and bondholders would have seen much better returns as well. Assuming the product concept and delivery is solid- organizational communication and streamlined execution to a well articulated vision (assuming raw material cost inputs and receivables are not completely out of whack) bring you home to prosperity. I have yet to meet a semi-sane employee who shows up to work everyday and says, "I want to do a REALLY $hitty job today!!!!!".

I think it won't work, because it gets the worse of both world. Workers would feel that UAW is cheating them out so they want to cheat out UAW first, and the remaining owners/workers would think that UAW isn't fair and either slack off or are disappointed. These kind of "co-op" only works in a small scale.

What a shame that our fear of communism keeps us from seeing the big picture, even when communism isn't remotely involved...

I don't think you appreciate the sweating that the average UAW is going through. Right now all of them are hoping that they have a job. They're hoping that they can eventually retire without being poor. I think that they'll be quite willing to go with what works. When they have themselves by the short hairs ..their hearts and minds will follow.

THIS IS PHILOSOPHICAL NOT POLITICAL MODS PLEASE LET THIS RIDE. THANKS. Ok...maybe socialistic tendency is the more appropriate wording to describe the big picture that many areas, soon to be in duress here in North America as well, are feeling evolutionary pressure towards. Quite frankly Mexico is already well on its way to communism if you consider the Cartel operations a worker class. The fall to communism would first hit in areas like CA and other border towns (no offense, but I have seen quite a few references lately and the state governments are near insolvency). I would talk about the US, but alas we kind of are melting into Canada and Mexico recently due to our own issues LOL!

While I understand dealerships really won't UAW, going along with what ToyotaNSaturn said above, at least moving to UAW salesmen means a step up to higher integrity in auto sales.

On a side note I used to have a UAW account at my old job that ran credit scores. Why do they make so much but have HORRIBLE credit? I'm taking sub 520 here as a general rule NOT the exception.

Having the UAW own part of the company is a great idea! Then, it's not "heck with them we're striking", it's "snap, we strike we leave the other owners to mess around with our share". Yes, it means pay and likely benefit cuts. They'll have jobs where doing well means they get more pay and benefits. Sounds like a win-win to me. No more UAW vs. management. They ARE management!

LOL! Crossword puzzles doesn't necessarily mean they can form complete, coherent sentences. Let's help them out... "The Marlboro I just smoked outside the shop door while working on a crossword puzzle was vexing."

I suspect a lot of drug/gambling problems among the rank and file. Lots of 'easy' money in an area leads to a lot of social problems......
