Type A transmission fluid

Hi - my old Clark/Michigan wheeled loader (from 1960's) lists "Type A" fluid for the Transmission. Is that a Dexron fluid? Is there a modern version of Type A fluid that can be used in place of the obsolete version?
Are Allison and Dexron fluids the same?

Here's one source of info:

The A/AQ-ATF/Dexron fluids are BACKWARDS-COMPATIBLE. That means that all transmissions that called for Type-A, AQ-ATF, Dexron, Dexron II, Dexron II-d, Dexron II-e, or Dexron III should now be using Dexron III.

Oddly enough, I've noticed that the Torqmatic Converter mounted to the Detroit Diesel 4-53 says "use Hydraulic Transmission Fluid Type C-2 plus a full-flow oil filter element cartridge". Is the Torqmatic Converter fluid different that the Type A fluid specified for the Clark Transmission? So confusing....

Lubriplate UTF meets the C-2 hydraulic fluid requirement. I don't think it is the same as the Type A requirement, but may also meet your other (or the same) "Premium Hydraulic Fluid" requirement in your other post. There may be others, but this is the first one I found.

Are there separate fill reservoirs involved here, so separate fluids can be used, or are we possibly looking at using one fluid everywhere?
I am not familiar with this machinery, so am only looking at the bare specs and info I can find.

Not sure about the number of fill reservoirs - will double check.

UTF is generally "Universal Transmission Fluid" or "Hydraulic-Transmission FLuid" with a viscosity slightly higher than old Dexron/Mercon III ATF, or about 9.0 cSt@100C.

For the transmission I would use this or similar:

If it's any help MB 236.2 approved fluids are Type A suffix A.

There's one reservoir for the main hydraulics and steering, and another reservoir for the torque converter and transmission.

Found an old spec sheet with the following info:

Main hydraulics: SAE 10W engine oil, API CC/CD SD/SE

Torque Converter and Transmission: C-3 grade transmission fluid or SAE 10W engine oil

Wouldn't the detergents in engine oil emulsify water in the system and facilitate corrosion, rather than using an ISO hydraulic fluid?

You're right about this.
I would rather use dedicated hydraulic/transmission fluids.
However engine oil is convenient and in real life, causing no real harm with its emulsifying properties though.
