Two tipping questions - pick up food and curbside pickup

The great thing about being regulars and having regulars is that the restaurant staff will 100% remember you. If you're cool then the staff will absolutely take good care of you. I had an older couple as regulars when I worked at Baker's Square that always ordered the same Pick 3 on Wednesday. The wife ordered a grilled cheese with no tomato, a soup I can't remember, and warm apple pie with ice cream; I don't remember what the husband ordered.
I haven’t heard the Bakers Square name in ages.

Tips started out as a way to give little extra for good service. I tip at least 20% and usually more at restaurants when I'm served.

My wife and I recently ordered Mexican food to go from a local restaurant and the bill was 44 bucks and change. I drove to pick it up and gave the guy three twentys and he asked me if I wanted change.

Really?!?
Right. They expect it, irrespective of the level of their service. I did the same thing at an East Coast Wings, the bill was like 25 bucks and paid with a 100. Same question: "Do you want the change?"

Ridiculous.

My son did the pizza delivery gig for a few years. There were some who did not even tip for delivery even though he was using his own car.
It's not the driver's fault but I think every place that delivers now charges a delivery fee. Worse than that, many want you to pre-pay the tip. My issue with that is, a) what if the driver brings my pizza along with 6 other stops and I'm near the end b) if my tip is "too low", do drivers pass over our order, and c) if I put $0.00 with every intention of giving the driver a CASH tip, they don't know that and can be slow, etc, etc.
If you're a regular you REALLY want to tip your pizza guy. Trust me.
When I was a teenager, I delivered pizzas and can honestly say I know of nothing concerning that drivers or inside staff did to customer pizzas. We did know our regular customers and which ones tipped poorly and which ones tipped well.

Interesting that this came up for me today - I found a Steak 'n Shake gift card with a little over a dollar on it so I went in for the Happy Hour Shake promotion to use it before I misplaced it again. Big changes since the last time I was there - self-order kiosks all over the front counters. Had to use them even if you were dining in (which I wasn't). During the process, the "do you want to tip?" screen comes up. Really? That was a definite "no".

I don't do curbside so that's an easy "no" from me as well.

Bring it to me = tip, I pick it up myself = no tip

I quit going to the coffee place next to my work because they expect a tip for putting coffee in a to go cup.

When Sweet Tomatoes was still in Illinois, I made it a point to stop in enough to become a regular. I got to know the guy who took the plates pretty well; he was a hard worker so I made it a point to tip him a decent amount. I guess it made an impression because it got to the point where he'd leave a small plate with 2-3 chocolate chip cookies at the table and there were only a few other tables that received that treatment.

I don't mind tipping for work being done. Entry at a kiosk like I said in my other post...nope.

Sweet tomatoes was awesome, food and service. They definitely deserve a tip.

Yea they went bankrupt then opened a new restaurant across the street around 2011ish and I started working there. Sadly it went into bankruptcy again, closed almost all the restaurants, and got bought by Famous Dave's. The GM and Baker still remember me but the food isn't as good anymore and the pies are ick.

Sonic carhops when the weather sucks might get a buck or 2 out of me. But no, I'm generally not tipping for a sloppily made cheeseburger and some 40 minute old fries.

I truly do tip pretty well in a sitdown provided the service is good.

to answer op's questions

#1 - maybe........ there is this little Mexican joint I could eat at every day and not get tired of that I will leave some cash in the tip jar if I have cash on me. That's about it. They also don't have a website and I have to call my order in. It's always loud and packed and my order is always perfect even though I have no idea how they hear me. That's worth a few bucks. I might tip the Pizza Hut person at the Hut right down from work especially because there is often only person in there working. I was an assistant manger at a Pizza Hut a million moons ago and I have sympathy for them....

#2 - I don't use that service. My much more attractive half does, and I will occasionally pick up a Sams order or something at the Mart. I do not tip.

I do not like to tip on the credit or debit card. I'm anal about making sure the tip goes to the correct person. The Mexican place is generally my ONE exception, and I have no idea how the tip jar is divvied up and I don't care. It's top notch service to get my food right in that bedlam.
