Two hot retirement states, one expected, one surprise

Regarding central SC, the capital city county (Richland County) is having to build on to it's existing jail and add over 275 "beds" due to overcrowding. This jail was built in 1994 and the crime has now outstripped this facilities ability to house inmates. Crime has risen here due to population increase and poor education.

Now, if your kids are willing to work at it, they can get a great education - they will be in AP or IB classes and in separate "schools in a school" environment and away from the general population (so to speak).

My kids did excellent and earned over 30 college credit hours in HS and did excellent in college (all full rides). Nonetheless, it takes work by both parents and the kids to make the education work - it is not a "push", but a "pull".

If you are a retiree it might work out just fine. Young family - there are only two HS in this "zone" that are even worth attending (Dreher and Flora).

And since this thread is about retirement, I agree. Just not a great place IMO to raise your family unless you are on-point at all times. NC (South Charlotte specifically) IMO is a great place for familes and education. When we lived there, it was excellent and I had no concerns at all.
Im going to keep this short (I hope) because no one is using BITOG to move into an area.
Your post presents a picture far from reality. Very slanted, however I am not implying you did this on purpose. It's that you are basing your post on lack of knowledge however well intended.

1. Your presenting facts on a jail expanding because a 30 year old jail needs more room in a booming population do to the desirable area. Also your data is including an inner city the second biggest county in the state. A county that is 771 (seven hundred and seventy one square miles) which is the state capital. I would consider expanding the jail after 30 years a good thing. More population, a county with the state capital and booming population. Yeah, the mass media got it right. Need more beds. Anyplace else in the country need to do the same?

2. ONLY TWO HIGH SCHOOLS IN THIS ZONE OF 771 SQ MILES worth going too? Ummmmm ... NO, the two you mentioned arent worth it as far as I am concerned MANY MANY SCHOOLS. Some of the best in the state. I'll keep it short. here is the information for both Lexington and Richland counties. More suburban areas not the inner city part. The 3rd HIGHEST High School in the entire state of over 100 High Schools is in Richland/Lexington SD5 and another is #10

3. It is ok if you hate the place but I suspect maybe you lived in an area not so great. These two counties side by side have some of the highest income in the state. The standard of living is high do to low taxes. Health Care? If you need specialized health care Columbia City including Richland and Lexington Counties are not exceeded by almost anyplace else. Heart hospitals included.

Anyway, we lived near Lake Murray and my daughter went to the best rated schools in the state of which that area has many .
Your data and experience suggests to me you were someplace in that 1000+ (between the two counties) sq miles area that wasnt as nice.

https://www.publicschoolreview.com/south-carolina/richland-county#google_vignette

This is also valid below because Richand and Lexington are side by side and the schools are in one or the other county including a combined Richland/Lexington district 4 miles from my previous home was the 3 highest rated school in the state.

My daughter was in Chapin MS AND HS

...
Now if many in here compare these top ten (or more) schools in each link to their own it will put things in perspective.

I think my link below paints a more accurate picture (including lake front homes of a 41 mile long lake with 600 miles of coastline and depth up to 200 feet deep. Including some of the cleanest sparkling water as it is the source of water for the city) One of the Bass fishing capitals of the world too. Low taxes, lots of buying power, land of the free. (though I no longer live there, I did for 16 years)

PS Due to my recent cancer (another thread) I only wish I had the options offer in Columbia SC area because the coastal area of NC/SC has very few options.

Since I won’t be headed to work or catching a flight I won’t have to worry about rush hour traffic or school zones.

It's a great thought but the reality of avoiding traffic becomes a little annoying sometimes. When you're retired you can do what you want when you want unless you're being constrained by avoiding heavy traffic times, then you're not. There are times you need a part for a project or DIY repair right now so it either goes unfinished as you wait for less busy roads or you wade into the traffic. Since you can mostly avoid heavy traffic times it may be more annoying. As our area keeps growing you can see the morning and evening traffic get worse as infrastructure doesn't keep up with the population. Then you take a breath and remember you're not working.

There are many beautiful places to retire here in America.
They will carry me outta here in a box.
I'm with you on that, @JeffKeryk.

Sue and I sold out and moved from Los Gatos to Colorado Springs in 2000. Long story. We bought a beautiful home; 4,000 sq/ft with a four car garage, near the 5-star and uber expensive Broadmoor Hotel. 4,000 sq/ft yet our house was the smallest one in the neighborhood!

We lived across the street from a 4 time (!!!!) Olympian, a woman I became good friends with. She and I used to ride our bicycles for 4 or 5 hours at a time with each other (fast, hardcore riding too). All our neighbors were outstanding people. We became close friends with a retired Air Force Colonel. I cannot speak highly enough about Coloradans. Great people!

But this Cali boy lasted just 26 months there before moving back to California. There is an old saying, "Californians do not transplant well". So true. Thankfully I had a trophy job that afforded us the financial means to move back to California.

My message to those talking about moving after they retire - be very careful with your decision. Moving when you're retired will likely be a one way trip. A retirement income may limit your choices should you not like your new location.

Picture is taken about 5 or 6 miles from where we live now. No way will I ever leave this. That's Morro Bay and Morro Rock you see in the distance.

Great advice...
For those of you not familiar, Morro Bay is roughly midway between the SF Bay Area and the LA-San Diego area.
Here's the majestic Hwy 1... It don't get much better.

CA = too many people, terrible ideas for laws. No thanks. Born in CA and got the heck out. Unfortunately people in WA just copy CA laws now and think insanity = good. So crime and hatred and nastiness follow. All in the name on open mindedness, inclusion and "smarter than everyone else". Simply doesn't work.

Hwy 1 has been closed for awhile now because of a landslide, but Sue and I have made many drives from home to Big Sur for lunch at Nepenthe. Beautiful scenery, a fantastic road, and a wonderful lunch - all in one. We feel very fortunate.

That's big city California and I share your feelings. Where we live is a different world from those areas.

There are more remote areas near us that I guarantee you, if a person were caught breaking and entering in the middle of the night, the homeowner isn't going to call 911. The intruder's rotting carcass would never be found.

We are a big state. Crime and nastiness can be found everywhere; they are part of life.

Yep, turned down promotions to stay out of major populations
I bought at the edge of Silicon Valley, at the foot of the Santa Cruz Mountains, to get a little refuge from the place that chews up people and spits out money. Worked out much better than I could have imagined; sometimes you get lucky.

How many miles was it to your old job ?

I am now amongst the throngs of retirees who are here in SC, but have lived here for more than 17 years. Its getting crowded. Very crowded. And it's not as cheap as that article makes out. Yes, no SS tax, but only first 15K of a pension or IRA is exempt from taxes. And larger metro areas in the state have high higher property taxes, including vehicles of most all types. Most of those larger areas have also been instituting incremental "penny taxes", in addition to a supplemental gas tax, to aid road construction, repair and maintenance. It ain't going to the roads, I can tell you that. SC has one of the most abysmal infrastructure and road system of most any state I been in. All of the growth with no increase in capacity just aggravates an already dire situation. Our county even has an additional "prepared food" (think any restaurant or fast food) tax of 10%. Then we have the utilities. Duke Power is the major player down here and they basically rob folks. I live in the Upstate and in Greenville County. The water is great, but expensive. And sewer. And reclamation. And if you live is a municipality, you pay it all over again. Yes, we have a beautiful state. Mountains on one side, with awesome beach/coast on the other. Weather is good, with mostly mild winters. But hot and humid summers. You definately pay for it, one way or another. Nice place, but I'm headed to AL.

Hello from Simpsonville!

If you need any insight, reach out. I know the area and work for the school system if that is a concern of yours.

Thanks. I was looking around the Five Forks area.

Luckily kids are grown so no need for schools.
