Picked up these two generators to fix up today

The Yamaha EF2800 has to be from the 80s, got it for free from a friend, inside of tank is very rusty and when I popped the air filter cover off there was no air filter inside, this shall be a fun project.

The John Deere I picked up for $75, the guy rebuilt the armature, needs a good carb cleaning and itll be good to go. Good ol flathead briggs, April 4th 1998 build date. Will give this to my cousin to run some lights when we have a hurricane.

It's amazing just how much older they look for being 1998. They could have passed for 70's or 80's. That's great to hear you'll get these to be runners again to get more life out of them.

That should be a fun set of projects. I like how you strapped the barrel too. Been moving a few and haven’t been happy with my methods.

I had it strapped to the front wall of the bed at first with a piece of wood. That didnt work so my neighbor who loves to build stuff welded up a square hold down with an eye on each side. 20-1/2 inches wide, fits perfect on the 30 gallon drum

Im only 33 but I rather fix and use older stuff. The quality isnt there these days on new stuff. I wish my 2012 F150 was a 1972.

Agreed, but we have to evolve towards newer stuff since older stuff becomes harder to repair. Older items just quit getting support after so many years that it becomes difficult to fix. Fortunately, there are many YT video's & lot's of these old L-head B&S engines still around. No surprise these are still around since they were most likely used somewhat very little over these last several decades being in a generator. Good luck & let us know how it goes. Good, bad, & the ugly.

I'm 34, and I can relate. I prefer older quality tools that just work. There is something to be said for a piece of power equipment that is well made, and when it does break you can quickly repair it and move on with what you were doing.
