As stated, I'm trying to convince my dad to give the USAA a try. He is a vet, but never bothered to join when he had the chance. While I'm not going to lie (I want to join myself
smile.gif
), I honestly think that are some good benefits that he could enjoy. That's why I need you guys to give me some of your stories to at least convince to give it a try. I came up with one-hopefully it's true...

Car insurance- MI rates are near some of the highest in the US now. I've been told that USAA rates are not calculated the same way the biggies do here. And if that's true, I'm thinking he could save at least 25% less than he is paying now. And they are a few week away from purchasing a new 12/13 T&C, so I'm trying to save them any money I can.

And this is not counting the CDs he could get, or some extra coverage he is looking for...

Thanks in advance guys. I'm trying to save my parents money (have them looking into Penfed right now) and offer them any help I can...and I've heard so many good things about the USAA from members...

The only time I have not been with USAA is when I bought my ZX600C Ninja and they would not cover it.

Would not cover it's replacement, a GSX-R 750, either.

So I've been with Farmers, State Farm, etc... and unless I have to, I will not go back. I will only use USAA.

I have been a USAA member since 1999, and stayed with them after leaving active duty. In my opinion, one of the best reasons to join USAA, is that the customer service they provide is second to none. Also, I think USAA's main claim to fame is their "one stop shopping" offerings; I have checking, savings, life insurance, car insurance, and renter's insurance with them. They also have just about every other service under the sun (e.g. loans, CD, etc.) I used to invest with them, but their handling fees are much higher than say, Vanguard. I think USAA's investment program is their only weakness.

I hope this helps.

I looked into USAA and their insurance rates weren't competitive with what I had with State Farm. They also use Progressive as their motorcycle carrier which I didn't care for.

I chose to stay with State Farm.

Get a quote, and go from there.

If your father is happy with his current carrier, and the price difference is minimal, I see no reason to switch. Loyalty can sometimes pay dividends, in this industry.

True, but the goal is to get him to sign up so he can find out for himself. The rest is up to him.

It never hurts to know what is out there.

I suppose, though for my line of work, if my agents are shopping their policies with other carriers, that's a major taboo in my book.

25+ year member now. I get called by other agents and when I tell them I have USAA they seldom quote me. Customer service is top notch. No complaints from me.

Not to mention the Subscribers Savings Account you get as a member. I now have about 3K in cash in there just from money being stashed there by USAA for being a member.

Every year, members get an SSA distribution check around the December time frame. Mine have been between $100-$200. Not life changing money, but an asset none the less. Once you have 40 years of membership, you MAY get two distributions if they pay the Senior Bonus in February.

https://www.usaa.com/inet/pages/faq_PC_Subscribers_Account_Distribution_index

I don't know if you would be eligible. I believe my wife and kids are associate members. I don't know if the SSA works for them in the same fashion.

Money back would nice, but I just want cheaper insurance. In just a few years time, what I paid for three cars will only cover two. I've called around here, and it only seems to be getting higher...

Could have more to do with MI than anything else...

USAA takes care of everyone- unless you are trying to file a claim against one of their policy holders. Back about 2 weeks before I traded in the cruze I was rear ended by a guy on Central Ave in Albany, going home from work. At first I didn't see any damage except a bent license plate on his car, so I didn't call the police. That decision came back to haunt me.

I got his information still, including policy# and driver license, etc. Got home and went over it again, and in the light where we had been you couldn't see it, but his license plate number was engraved into my bumper. $600 repair job, filed a claim against him through USAA. Well, he never answered their phone calls, called them back or responded to the letters.

They said they had no proof he was there. Luckily I did have the presence of mind to take pictures of the scene, as well as his license plate. they took that, and they told us, very snarky and rude, that they still didn't have proof he was there, and that because he hadn't called them back, tey would have to wait another month to make a decision. Basically drawing it out as long as they could. And I TOLD them, I CLEARY took pictures of his license plate, showing his car was there. Check the pic EXIF data if you don't belive me. They were not pleasant to deal with at all, very rude to myself and my mom. They told us we could file through state farm, and we said we shouldn't HAVE to.
Mom threatened them to file an insurance dept complaint (and she ended up doing so anyway, because of how they handled the situation).

Mom was extremely unhappy, and flat out told them that she would never recommend USAA to anyone (well, besides that she works for state farm) and she is apalled at how they treated us, and she couldn't believe this is the company that is supposed to represent our military.
YMMV

My experience too; even if one of their customer's is a fault according to the police record. They don't seem to even want to cover the bills their customer caused.

So, since you screwed up and didn't report a reportable accident, you're trying to shift blame to the insurance company, hoping they'll take your word for what happened?

It's your dad's business, not yours.

If it makes sense for him to change, and he wants to change, more power to him. However, if you're pushing him to change so that you can get a cheaper rate then it's time to stand on your own two feet.

I gave them PICTURES, showing both cars, both license plates, clearly. With exif data showing when and where they were taken. AND he refused to return or answer their phone calls- for 2 MONTHS. CLEARLY he was avoiding them.

I've been a USAA member for I don't know how many years. At least back to about 1996. I can't imagine a better multi-service comapny with which to do business. Services we currently have through USAA:

- Home mortgage
- Home insurance
- Auto insurance
- Personal property floater
- Checking and savings accounts
- Retirement accounts

I have also previously had an auto loan with them before.

We do all of our banking entirely online, and they have a fantastic online banking system. Getting cash is easy: go to any ATM you like and draw out cash. If it's a non-USAA ATM, they even refund your ATM fees. USAA has opened not one, but two USAA Financial Centers here in town recently so they are starting to create a local presence where they have a large concentration of members.

Our neighborhood got hit by a tornado two Aprils ago and we needed a new roof. Many homes in town were destroyed. USAA parked a couple of motor homes in a local car dealership lot and had a drive-through service area for vehicle damage and they had on-scene estimators for home inspections. Our roof was inspected that same week (it wasn't gone, just had severe hail damage) and I had our damage check for over $10,000 in about a week and a half. They had a very strong presence in the community that April, and have since opened those two financial centers of which I spoke earlier.

The best part is their customer service. You can call pretty much anytime you're awake and talk to a real person. You're also getting a real American when you call, not someone from overseas who is contracted to answer telephones. They've always been extremely friendly and helpful. I've also asked questions via their online message system (internal to their website) and my questions have always been answered within 8 hours or so.

I can't imagine a better company for these types of services.

We have state farm, my mom works for them, and it's the same with them. But they also don't treat people from other companies filing claims like parasites.

My wife's best friend works for State Farm, and they still have all of their stuff with USAA (her husband is US Navy). If they didn't treat you well, that sucks. You can find anybody out there who has been mistreated by an insurance company.

Go Google "state farm sucks". Everybody's got a sob story.

Whoa...Nick...how does USAA "represent our military"???

They cater to our military, the members (including former members, or children of membrs) of the military are eligible to buy their products but they do NOT represent the military except in the sense of dealing with insurance claims made against those military members. USAA is not the military, not part of the US Government. So what if your Mom won't recommend them to anyone? USAA won't do business with most people anyway...only the above mentioned category...

Next, you basically did things wrong. Want to file an insurance claim? Get a police report. You let the guy go without a police report...so, without that objective determination...it never happened...you might have made it up...

You have an insurance company to represent you. Calling USAA directly is like going to court without your attorney. You should go through your company for an insurance claim.

You took a picture? Sure, well, I could take a picture of your car in a parking lot, then call up your insurance company and file a claim...without a 3rd party on the scene, no witness, no objective assessment, it's simply a case of "he said, she said"....So, how would you want State Farm to deal with me if I were making an unsubstantiated claim against you? One that would raise your insurance premiums? One that would cost you $$ They represent you by protecting you from false claims.

Snarky? That's so subjective that it's not worth repeating. Insurance department claim? Yeah, well in that claim, you'll have to explain how you didn't follow the law and call the police in the case of an accident...makes "Snarky" seem a bit irrelevant....I would be "Snarky" to a parasite that I thought was trying to shake me down for $$ on an unsubstantiated claim...

Instead of trying to pressure a multi-billion dollar insurance company yourself, you need to a: let your insurance company handle it or b: take the guy to court yourself.

And next time? Call the police...or it never happened...
