Well guys, I've been a Mobil 1 user since the 1980's. I also use Redline, but mostly M1. My last UOA from blackstone showed a concern for bronze wear on my 6.0L Sierra Denali truck. It has 47,000 miles of which 45,000 have been Mobil 1. I don't see any issues, but the concern of Blackstone was enough for me change the oil today with 4,100 miles on it for another sample. OLM indicated 30% for the curious. This time I used Pennzoil Platinum just as an experiement. I will run it 4,000-5,000 miles and send it in to see if the wear issue goes away.

I'll keep you informed.

PP will not do as well would be my early prediction especialy if a TBN is done! It will at best match the M1 in terms of wear metals it willnot best it by a significant margin if at all!

I think Redline or AMsoil S3K 5W30 would be my first too picks if accelerated wear was going on and I was trying to use chemistry to slow it down!

Those are my thoughts exactly, sir. I alwsy do a TBN and Mobil always comes back atleast a 3-4. We'll see what the wear looks like and if there is something going on, I've got a case of Redline 5W/30 ready to go. The wear may not be anything at all since it just popped up on the one UOA and it could have been a cleaner or something I was using. I do intake cleanings periodically. But I need to be sure because the last 2 oil changes before my last UOA were not sent in for testing. Costs to much so I do it every 2-3 changes.

I sure hope so!

Make sure you have a few consecutive runs before a UOA of a certain oil because you can get a false UOA reading otherwise as the chemistry is making itself at home so to speak.

That's true.

Yeah... Look at what happened with Mobil-1... Everyone seeing high Iron numbers was freaking out and the majority was because people didn't use it for a few consecutive runs before doing a UOA.

Pardon the oil for making itself at home.

Same thing I wanted to know, but here is Blackstone's exact comments:

"It's been quite a while since we've seen a sample from your Denali and the engine that powers it has
gained many miles in the meantime. By now all wear should be reading fairly close to universal average levels but you
can see that copper is still well above average. This level shows excess wear at a brass/bronze part. As all other wear
read normally we aren't too worried about it but we do think it warrants monitoring. No harmful contaminants were
found. The TBN read 3.2 so you still had some active additive left. 1.0 is low. Check back in ~4K miles for another look."

The only level hi-lighted on the report is Copper at 76. The UOA before this one had copper at 142 and the truck had 9,900 miles on it then. So I may really be ok since reviewing the past UOA's shows a drop in Copper each time. But, I am doing as they recommended and have my sample ready to mail tommorrow.

new here, dont want to start a new thread on pp, and have been reading up on it.

i am leaning towards switching to pp simply for the $20 price through wal-mart. i have a 2002 altima 3.5, with the vq35, the change will be at 109,000... is this too late to switch to syn?

i feel like such a noob here. this is my first car and i have done all the maintenance on it my self, (3k in random mods).

any help is appreciated, even if it's telling me to just search more. i just saw a topic on pp and though i would jump in!

hattrick3518,

No worries on feeling new, you have 2 posts as of now... :)

IMO it's not too late to switch to Syn. the VQ35 likes thicker oil according to most UOA's I've seen, and I found that running Castrol Syntec 0w30 (referred to here as GC - "made in Germany") is one of the best choices for the VQ35. (I had an '02 3.5 MT)

I never did try PP on it, as I wasn't really around here back then and did not know much about PP. I just know my VQ35 and my fathers VQ30 run awesome on GC. mild 6-7K mile OCI's no issues whatsoever.

What was it on before?

If the engine is still in pretty good shape, I can't see why not...

Bronz is in the copper family and GM engines are known for high copper. In the UOA section there is a UOA report for a Ranger PU on the 1st page. It shows some high copper but there isn't any place for this metal to come from in this engine. I am beginning to believe UOAs are common with hugh inconsistencies.

i have been running valvoline premium conventional 5w30, with a bosch filter (#3323). prior to that it was on quaker state 5w30 conventional.

thanks,

i am looking forward to it myself. i dont know if i will do an analysis on it. i am just hoping that it doesnt leak like crazy upon the first change. to this day there has never been one leak of oil so i don't expect any to pop up now.
