Hi Guys,

I always have this question.
Which one of these is a true synthetic oil?

1) Pennzoils Platinum @Wal-mart $20.00 for 5 quart
2) Mobile 1 few dollars than PP
3) Amsoil More exspensive

Is it worth to go with Mobile 1 for few bucks more or more exspensive for Amsoil or stay at PP. Thanks.

They are all "Synthetic" according to the law and how they are "allowed" to be labeled. If by "True Synthetic" you mean which one contains a majority of a man made Base Stock versus hydro cracked & refined mineral oil then you would be looking for a Group 4 or 5 basestock.

Pennzoil Platinum although an excellent oil and a proven performer is mainly Group 3. (highly refined mineral oil) with an excellent additive package.

Depending on which Mobil-1 product you are refering to it can be anything from a Group 3 & 4 mix, to mainly 4 to mainly 4 with some 5. It's all speculative though because Big Bad XOM won't confirm it.

Amsoil has one line (XL-7500) which is mainly a Group III and API Licensed, but all their other oils are mainly Group 4.

So by definition the only "True Synthetics" would be the Amsoil and the higher end Mobil oil like their TDT, D1, 0w40 etc. because of their man made base stock content.

that would be transportabil.

It seems to me that at this point the question still needing to be address is whether a group 4 or 5 base stock results in a better oil than a group 3 base stock. Has anyone observed any difference from a UOA?

your question is the eternal question here on BITOG. greater minds than ours have debated this very question ad nauseam for all eternity. you, young grashopper, would do well to acquaint yourself with the 'search' funtion and delve into the bowels of the World's Greatest Motor Oil Forum, lest you release unto this world another cataclysmic unending thread.

It's not a good question IMO because a different base stock would require a different additive pack. If you compare the two and notice a difference, you can't really tell whether it's due to the base stock or the additive pack.

Moreover, you might find that one engine likes the group III while the other one likes the group IV/V.

This is why you have to look at the whole formulation. Looking at just one part is not only incomplete but possibly misleading.

IMO, debating the base stocks of engine oils is kind of like debating the fashion senses of CEOs...

Most likley the cheapest properly rated oil would allow 99.675% of our vehicles we drive "with proper care" to the junkyard.
