This is a distortion. No one with a brain believes that. If they did, they'd all be using dino diesel oils.
What a Pennzoil Platinum user believes is that the
total formulation, and not any one part, is what determines performance. You might disagree, but the used oil analysis are on their side.
If there's any opinion that's myopic here, it's the opinion that base stock trumps all else -- which is in effect what you're saying when you say a Group IV/V oil "will always outperform a Group III."
Ever hear the expression, "all things being equal?" That is implied in every thread that claims PAO is superior to Hydrocracked base. You know it, I know it and everyone who reads along knows it. Yet it always is steered away from that implication to suit the bias of the PP people.
If the
exact same additive package were placed into a Group III synthetic and a PAO synthetic respectively, then the PAO based oil would outperform it. It's simply the truth. Why this bothers anyone is more a matter of psychology than tribology. In 5 minutes someone will claim such a scenario doesn't exist, on a shelf somewhere, but that just circumvents the point.
There should be a section for fondling oil and one for discussing it.
