Is the operating pressure port acceptable for a temperature pickup location?

Why not? Worst thing it could read would be case temp.

I'd use the sump/pan.
This is the standard reference.
Shoot for 175F

I was just told about a guy who used a pressure testing port and the sender wasn't up to line pressure and leaked. I have have no other details. No pressure in the pan.
