I have a trailer I use for towing my motorcycle. The tires it came with originally were 8 inchers however, those tires would wear out extrememly fast (I was only getting about 2000 miles from a set so I stepped up to 12" tires and wheels. Wow, what a difference! I've already got over 3K miles on these tires and they're barely showing any wear at all! I may get an entire summer (10K miles or more) out the 12s.

Nope, just thought I'd pass along some info in case anyone has a trailer with 8" tires on it and they're not happy with the tread life....

I am having good results with 12" Kumho passenger car tires on my little trailer. I do not trust most ST (special trailer) tires--too many are unreliable junk.

What brand trailer and tires have your been using to tow your bike with? And what pressure do you keep the tires inflated to?

I assembled a Harbor Freight trailer back in March '08 with 8" tires, and I've got many more miles than that on the trailer, and the tires are barely showing any wear. The trailer has done several back and forth trips between Denver and NYC (~1800 miles each way) towing motorcycles at high speeds, and then countless amounts of miles in and around Denver, doing all the things utility trailers do.

When I was using the 8" tires I was buying them at Wal-Mart. Don't know what brand they were, but they didn't last long at all. It could be they wear out fast because my bike is pretty heavy (almost 800 lbs). I was running them with about 80 PSI. The trailer is a trailer in a bag. All I know is the 12" tires I'm running now are wearing much better than the 8" tires did. I've got over 3k on this set already and I see no noticeable wear at all so far. I'm running about 70 PSI in the 12s to give them a bit more cushiness since the trailer itself has no suspension. It looks like I will get an entire towing season from this set of tires, which will be anywhere from 12k-15k miles.

The difference in revolutions per mile between the two has to be a fairly large number. There's a whole lot of your increase in tire life right there... not in the quality of the tires, just the size.

When the tow vehicle is running 65 miles an hour, those 8" tires are spinning wickedly fast.

Just some clarification.

Grampi is discussing tires that are speed restricted to 62 mph (100 kph). These are not ST type tires.

ST type tires are speed restructed to 65 mph.

These are different kinds of tires - even though they may be being used in similar service.

Junk for sure. I had two 36 ft gooseneck trailers. One with LT tires and one with an oddball size only available in ST. Never had any problems with the LT trailer, nor my F350's tires. The ST tires would simply fall apart on a regular basis. Different brands made no difference. Being brand new made no difference, those would fall apart too.
