Okay Im confused.

Tremec specifically recommends against Mercon V or any synthetic in the TR3650.

They recommend Havoline DexronIII/Mercon Nonsynthetic

Ford starting in 2002 recommended Mercon Nonsynthetic in all TR3650's and warned not to use anything with a MerconV rating.

Starting spring 2007 Ford recommends MerconV noting they will cease marketing Mercon Nonsynthetic in July 2007.

So what do I use for top up fluid in my 2007 trans?
Tremec says Havoline Nonsynthetic.
Ford says MerconV.
I suspect it was factory filled with the Nonsynthetic Mercon (discontinued) which may or may not be the same as Havoline.

Ford changed their minds, not the fluid attributes.
Mercon V was OK to use all along, as a substitute for Mercon. Many aftermarket transmission guys figured this out, and Ford finally decreed it was OK.

Amsoil, Redline, BG, and Royalpurple..... make excellent fluids.

Down south, the weather doesn't require the cold weather properties of a full synthetic. So, ANY Dex/Merc equivalent can be used. Just change the fluid in reasonable intervals.

You could also get away with the slightly thicker MTFs/MTLs from those boutique manufacturers too.

owners manual on my 02 Mustang GT with tr3650 said to use synthetic dex fluid. I also emailed tremec and the suggested synthetic dex fluid as well...

Tremec tells us NOT to use it in T56es. I can't see why it would be OK in the 5 speeds, being that they have very similar materials, blockers, function.
Even IF it resists shear down better than Dex 3 (not even sure IF it does), it starts so much lower in cSt that it would not protect everything in the manuals very well.

Resurrecting this neolithic thread to add a link as this one is titled easier to find with search engine.

Just posted over in another thread about a lot of Mustang forum members supposedly getting best results with Pennzoil synchromesh in the "notchy" TR3650's. And that Tremec supposedly recommends against RP in the trans, etc. More info? See link below.

I went ahead and tried the advice as outlined in the last post above.

Background: Bought this supercharged 06 Mustang GT with 19,500 miles on it. Drove it 1000 miles home, then changed the OEM transmission fluid to Royal Purple SynchroMax as the original stuff caused rough, really bad gear shifting.

I thought MAYBE the RP helped the crunchiness a bit but not so much.

Now at 24,500 miles after some ferocious miles datalogging and tuning, I drained the transmission fluid and refilled with Pennzoil Synchromesh filled very carefully to 1/2" below the fill hole as proper level also supposedly helps a lot.

Something is working right. Wow, but the trans shifts SUPER nice! Like it always should have.

2 philosophies on this apparently; maybe more:

Philosophy 1.) "trans in a bottle" type fix with the Pennzoil synchro is 'just a bandaid' and even though it works great, the trans should instead have been rebuilt.

(of course, rebuilt TR3650's generally continue to be reported as "notchy", etc... so what would the rebuild have netted me other than a ridiculous repair bill?? ;-)

Philosophy 2.) All prior fluids were WRONG for this trans and should never have been used - especially the Ford OEM fluid. Pennzoil Synchro (or GM Synchro - hardy har) is what should have been in the trans all along and replacing the fluid FIXES THE PROBLEM.

I subscribe to philosophy 2 above. Have read that the longer I drive it on this stuff, the better it will get. That doesn't sounds like a bleeping 'bandaid fix' to me!

After only 55 miles of driving today on the new trans fluid, the difference is already astonishing in a very good way.
