Still confused - Mercon vs. Mecon V

I agree.
1st, consider that Ford's TSBs/chart may be specific for 'dealers only' to prevent dealers from using non-Motorcraft fluids. This means, when reading their info, don't expect that this is the situation for ALL other brands of fluids, just the Motorcraft ATF's that Ford uses.
Read page 66 in the above Ford links:
5r55 Transmissions......Do not use Mercon-V RED bottles.....use only Mercon-V Black bottles.
Thats an interesting warning for identically spec'd fluids. I guess that the solution with the early Mercon-V's was to change the bottle color
Yeah, trust your OEM fluid!
So, who is to blame? Ford, ConocoPhillips, or the numerous suppliers that provide the seals/gaskets/clutches/bands/other parts to the transmission assembly
I don't see the licensing program flawed.
IMO, MerconV is better then Mercon always.
Too bad that Motorcraft had some 'teething problems' with their Conoco sourced ATF.
I'll stick with my Aamco, Valvoline, or Pennzoil MV.
