In the past 15 years, Dexron has gone from Dexron II to Dexron II(E) to Dexron III to the latest Dexron IIIH and I've probably missed a few.
During that same time, Mercon has gone from..Mercon to Mercon. (There is Mercon V, but since it isn't officially backwards compatible, it doesn't really count.).
Does that mean Ford has never upgraded the Mercon specifications? Or that they have and didn't change the name? Is the Mercon spec in 2005 the same that it was in 1988 when it came out?
For a typical Ford automatic specifying Mercon, would the latest dual-rated DexronIIIH/Mercon ATF perform better/last longer than a dual-rated DexronII/Mercon ATF (if such were still made)?
In other words, given that most ATFs are dual-rated Mercon/Dexron (at least until DexronVI), do the continual upgrades of Dexron from II to IIIH result in a fluid that works better in Ford transmissions that specify Mercon?
