Looks like Mobil is going to finally reformulate Mobil 1 ATF to include Mercon V compatibility. Here is a reply I got from Mobil just a short time ago.

quote:

A reformulation of Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF is in the works. It will meet Mercon V, Dexron IIIH, and Chrysler requirements. Timing? Later this year. The Multi-Vehicle ATF (synthetic blend) will satisfy Mercon V needs until then.

Hmmm, I suppose when EOM comes out with a Universal synthetic ATF it will instantly be accepted by the same resident "experts" that continually denegrate the Amsoil Universal ATF that's been around for many years?

Sort of like what just happened with the release of the Mobil 1, Extended Performance oils?

Vstrom,

I see you're an engineer ...excellent.

Go to the Lubrizol.com website and review the comparative specs for the Mercon and Mercon V specifications. Then tell me why they are mutually exclusive?

In fact, the Mercon V fluid is simply an improved version of Mercon. It requires better high and low temp properties, but has the same friction retention properties, abeit with tighter limits. Mercon V also requires passing a four ball wear test < 0.40 mm,a Falex V-Block Test > 750 lbs and an FZG gear test at stage 11 or above.

I've worked as a rocket propulsion engineer for well over twenty years. Ford is totally out to lunch on this one ....

*I* don't know why other than Ford has really stressed not to use dual rated fluid.

A highly regarded transmission engineer at Ford has repeatedly sressed this on another board, he would not say why but he knew something he would not tell us. Unfortunately Ford made him stop talking or lose his job

Speculation is it has something to do with the V debonding clutch material nothing to do with wear or friction.
