I was looking through my wifes Mercury Sable owners manual and found a warning. The warning said that ATFs recommended for both Mercon and MerconV should not be used in transmissions for which Mercon is recommended. The odd thing is that the manual is for a 2003 vehicle that recommends the use of MerconV. The manual says that the dual fluid is fine for the Sable but then goes on to make recommendations for older vehicles. The manual even says that MerconV fluids are not "compatible" with Mercon fluids.

I'm pretty sure the auto manufacturers are making this WAY more difficult than necessary.

I know some get sick and tired of hearing it from a sales weenie, so why not from me? Again. Try as they might, try if they can. Use new words. Make up a few words. Come up with good ATF (not kidding), kill off the old. Change the viscosity, change the additives (all of them). But at the end of the day, the fluid is still ATF and it has no magical powers. Knowing these fluids, analyzing and testing them all - a synthetic universal fluid is still a great choice.

What? you're kidding, right? All my fluids possess magical powers. And, they are certified by the OEM as such

Must be my blood sugar again. Time to fill the bowl with 'magically delicious' cereal

It is now humorous as Mercon is being phased out and our new bottled fluid is now Mercon/MerconV so go figure huh. The just release a TSB similar to the 5W-20 stuff back dating MerconV to Power Steering, MTX, and ATX situations that used to use Mercon.

Book is out of date, oops.

I use MerconV to top everything off now. No more Mercon to use.

The FORD TSB # is 06-14-4
Vehicles that specify Mercon are to use Mercon V or fluids labeled as both Mercon / Mercon V

Vehicles that specify Mercon V MUST be serviced with fluids labeled as Mercon V or fluids labeled as both Mercon / Mercon V

In other words, if you vehicle calls for Mercon V , make sure that the fluid is labeled Mercon V and not just Mercon.
