Hi ,
I am a newbie here but after searching a bit and not finding a definitive answer wanted to post the following question and solicit some feedback. I recently purchased a 09 Toyota Tundra with less than 40k on it. I want to protect my purchase and was wondering what the most cost effective oil/filter combination is for the 5.7? I have always used WIX filters for the past vehicles I owned and worked on with either high quality Conventional or synthetics as warranted.

I found an interesting comparison of the cartridge style filters for the Toyota 5.7 and was interested in the results.

I am leaning toward using 5-20 Mobil 1 as Amsoil is pretty pricey and harder to get where I live. The cost of the OEM filter cartridge as about half what the WIX will cost me. Thanks for your comments and suggestions.

You've got a great truck. I have found that oil filter choices for the 5.7 and 4.6 stinks. I have been using a Puro Classic for mine and have had excellent results with Synpower 5w20.

I would go with Wix or a Napa Gold (which are made by Wix) for a standard filter. Amsoil makes a synthetic filter which is what I run.

A piece of advise I'll give is get the proper oil filter wrench (and a metal one at that). The cap on the filter housing can be quite tight.

Thanks for the link KootFly. I fooled around with aftermarket filter elements after buying a 2008 RAV4 V-6. The OEM fit the the canister the best. The MicroGard was small compared to the OEM, as was the PureOne. The PureOne collapsed considerably, which tells me that it couldn't handle high pressure, even with a good bypass valve. I went back to the OEM filters and never looked back.

I also have a 2012 4Runner and 2013 Tundra 5.7L. I just changed the oil and filter in the Tundra at 505 miles and noticed that there was a lot of metal flake in the canister after I removed the filter element. I did not notice any in the drained oil though. That tells me the OEM filter is at least trapping the big stuff, and probably doesn't have to bypass oil much, if at all.

INDYMAC, Ernp, and Gonefishing,

Thanks for the info and tips. For the money I will go with the OEM filters 40.00/ 10 online from a dealership is a good price from what I can tell. I still have about 2 yrs of power train factory warranty with the truck so using OEM filters won't hurt my case.( if I ever need to raise a warranty claim) As to Oil although it is at a premium for the miles I will accrue I am pretty convinced the Mobil 1 5w20 Full Synthetic looks like a good bet and can be bought at Walmart or [censored] Tire on sale every few months.
Thanks again, love the Tundra it is a beast!!
