The truck has 140k on it, when i'm around town at times the trans will bump slightly, seems to do it when the rpm's are around 1000, doesn't do it all the time just when the truck seems to be in a bind at low rpms, if i keep the truck in "4" gear and drive around town it's fine, maybe it has something to do with it being in "D" and the overdrive etc....should i drain and fill the trans or what .....any ideas ?
Thanks

Maybe slip yoke on the drive shaft? I commonly causes a "bump" feeling. Never hurts to drain and fill the transmission anyway.

Has the transmission ever been serviced? A good service might include things like...draining the fluid, removing the transmission pan, replace the transmission filter (if applicable), re-torque the valve body bolts, adjust the linkage, check the inputs from the throttle position sensor (a faulty TP sensor will cause erratic shift timing and affect torque converter engagement), and refill with fluid.

I bought the truck about 6 months ago, not sure if its been serviced or not, last few days i have been putting the truck in "4" instead of the "D", and that has stopped the bumps, etc...something about being in Overdrive it doesn't seem to like

Torque convertor? Usually it is best to find a competent trans / mechanic familiar with Toyotas because probably they have come across the problem on other like models. with the years I worked on our forklifts and Ford vans that most issues were common to the model. though not always. For example a wire that fails or differential bearings. I like to do all the work my self but some time it is 100% worth the cost to have an expert that will not just fix what ever, but upgrade the repair so it will not happen again.

According to a lot of people Toyota’s don’t have problems, and any problem you might be experiencing is all in your head.

I’m kidding of course, all mechanical things have issues. When was the last time the transmission has been serviced? I’d start with that and see if it helps. I would use the manufacture approved fluid too.

Torque converter shudder. My 09 had the same issue, if you catch it early and exchange the transmission fluid it should alleviate the issue. If not, it'll need a new converter. Got the fluid exchanged in mine at 130K (BG fluid exchange at the Toyota dealer) and it seemed to help it 50%. Unloaded the truck due to the frame 10K miles later so not sure if it got worse or not.

Lubegard Shudder Fix is a fan favorite among Tacoma owners when it comes to this issue. A fluid exchange and adding some of this stuff has reported to work in alot of cases.

01 Tacoma v6 auto here, a while back when driving around 50-70 and I let off a little if someone cut into my lane I would feel a shudder or bump and thought the trans was sick. I read on some forums and tried cleaning my MAF sensor. Cured mine. That was probably at 175K, now at 250K doing just fine. I clean it annually since then. I think it was the converter lock unlocking due to engine miss???
