toyota oil filter change

I picked up a used 02 prizm last week 66,233, the car was traded in during Dec. 08 and had a dealer serviced oil and filter change,,It was only test driven before I bought it about 100 miles since Dec.. now it has 66,400.I want to change the dealer oil to durablend 5w30...do you suggest I change the flter also, or just the oil would be ok..thanks

Whether you change the filter or not, everything will be OK.

The ~.25 quart of old oil in the filter won't make that much of a difference. There is 3X that amount already in the engine that won't come out during the oil change.

Since the filter is not full of dirt, not necessary to change it.

I would drive it on that oil and filter for at least another 1000 miles, just to get some value from it. No sense in dumping clean oil, is there?

Why don't you just drive it for 3,500 miles and start with nice clean OCI's at 70k miles. Heck, just switch to a High Mileage oil at 70k and do 10k OCI's.

The reason I want to change the oil is that the dealer... a toyota dealer ... told me that they buy bulk oil from several companies..getting the cheapest price...they are not able to tell me exactly what brand of oil they used for my service..they said that could change from one week to the next since they do so many..so for my own piece of mind,I want to dump the oil they put in.

why not just change the filter along with the oil. if you're worried about the type of oil the dealer used. it cant be more than $4 for one.

Agreed. If you are going to mess with changing the oil why not do the filter, which is cheap, at the same time while there and doing it?

It's not going to hurt that engine. Most dealers buy bulk oil. At least they were honest with you.
