Yeah, I think they will eventually have a campaign to repair them. They have always been good with me as far as fixing any defects. That said my 2AZ-FE is at 95,000 miles and uses just shy of a quart in 5000 miles. It has to go to college with my youngest daughter so I will have to brainwash her on checking the oil every week and how to "top off". So my guesstimate is that it will go to 150,000 before we get rid of it in 2020.

A few quick observations / opinions if this were my car...

It is too early to identify a pattern of oil consumption since this car is new to you. I would just note what you observe.

Highway driving / high RPM's can lead to increased consumption in my experience. City driving at slower speeds will probably slow consumption.

Don't overfill the motor (only 4 qts)

A 20w oil is the recommended viscosity. Toyota also says an oil with a higher viscosity may be better suited if the vehicle is operated at high speeds, or under extreme load conditions (page 395 of your owners manual). If you were doing mostly highway, I would use a 0w-30. All other normal driving, I would use 0w-20.

You mentioned nothing about leaks. A 120,000 mile Toyota with no leaks is not high mileage in my opinion. I wouldn't be using a High Mileage oil if this was my car.

Nope no leaks. I thought my 2azfe took 4.5 quarts? That's what I put in it.

OP and myself are now covered by the (LSC) ZE7 campaign.

"Limited Service Campaign (LSC) Remedy
Authorized Toyota dealerships are requested to replace the Engine Pistons at NO CHARGE to the vehicle’s owner."

"Please contact you local Toyota Dealer for appropriate diagnosis and repair at no cost to you."

Wow this would be nice but I'm not sure that I have enough consumption to get the repair.

You don't....

Well I looked up my Vin and there is no service campaigns for my vehicle. But the lsc ze7 clearly says 2009 toyota matrix. Wonder what's up with that.

" Additionally, Owners will be advised that if they believe their vehicle has excessive oil consumption, they can contact an authorized Toyota Dealer to have the engine oil consumption test performed to determine if they will be eligible for future part replacement once sufficient parts are available."

the key word is believe

So even if you dont have a TSB, you can have the oil consumption test done if your vehicle is listed on the campaign.

Some manufactures won't do anything even around 1 quart per 1000 miles.

This!!

Oil consumption is a mechanical problem. The rate of consumption may be manageable, but there is a problem with either rings, guides, stem seals, PCV or gaskets.

Long term, it's cheaper to fix the problem than to keep on buying more oil to top off with, only to have it burn away
I humbly disagree. sir My first 529e used a qt in 1500 miles I went to cheap oils and discovered Supertech and STP filters I put 200k miles without changing the head gasket which was the root cause of the external leak. I know of a perfectionist 528e owner who put 3 HGs on due to the condition. I couldn't afford to have the car down for the time. This was back when oil could be bought for 99 cents a qt

If I do have a consumption issue, and this thread makes me believe that I might not, does that mean that I'm eventually doomed for catastrophic failure? Seems like enough folks have issues with oil burning with this motor but repair horror stories don't seem to plague the internet. If I run my normal 4k OCI with quality synthetic can I just live with checking the oil a few times a week, topping up when appropriate and still consider this a reliable ride for long distance travel?

Get it fixed @ the dealership, it's FREE. Why live with a faulty engine?? Burning oil will kill your catalyst as well which is NOT covered under any extended warranty.

I repeat for those who haven't read the entire thread...1 qt per 2k miles will not fall under Toyota's definition of excessive consumption and will NOT be fixed for free....1 quart per 1.5k miles may not even be considered excessive.

You can worry from a 1/4 qt drop after 550 miles if you wish or go 2k miles and see where your oil level actually is....patience is a harsh mistress.

5w30 is the recommended oil down to 0°....and below actually, but certainly to 0....You may be cold at 30, but your engine isn't.

Extended hiway cruising engines will like 30w more than 20w....

Your engine is spec'd for 5w30 and any variation from that can not be an valid measure of the engine's performance or of oil consumption. (That's what Toyo would say, at least.....when I got the Kitacam, spec'd for 5w30, the dealer was pleased I had stuck with THAT when going from dino to syn)

Again...you just got your car...enjoy it before reading too much here and begin the cycle of internet worry inherent in such forums.

Looks like you put too much faith in the manufacturers recommendations, now they have admitted there is a fault and offer a recall.

It IS excessive consumption and it DOES highlight an underlying mechanical problem.

Any oil use during an OCI is excessive tbh

Catalytic Converters have an 8 year/ 80,000 mile coverage....unfortunatly the OP has already passed the maximum mileage.

I don't think it's been "proven" or figured out at what level of oil consumption it takes to kill a cat.

Not only that but this is a fair amount of work--and thus risk. Risk that it doesn't get put together right.
