What after market fluid is equivalent or better? I plan on adding a bottle of Red Line Water Wetter to it.

Vehicle is a 03 Toyota Tacoma with a 4-cylinder.

Thanks for knowledgeable replys Gents.

I haven't seen any aftermarket fluids that seem to mimic the Toyota formula.

Anything aftermarket that is better? Well, its debatable... do some searching around to learn more.

Toyota, as does Nissan and Honda, uses an ethylene glycol antifreeze base with OAT and a stiff dose of phosphates for hybrid corrosion protection. These three automaker antifreeze formulations are essentially equivalent, differing only in the marker dye color used - Red for Toyota, Green for Honda, and Blue for Nissan. Consider them interchangeable. None of these antifreezes contain any silicates. As far as I know, there are no equivalent aftermarket passenger car versions of this coolant configuration in the U.S. There are two alternate technologies that shouldn't cause harm. G-05 is ethylene glycol with OAT and reduced level silicates for hybrid corrosion protection.
DEX-COOL(tm) and the various GM-unlicensed dexclones are ethylene glycol and OAT as the sole corrosion inhibitor. I'm nearly 23 months into a fill of WalMart SuperTech "All Makes Extended Life" (a dexclone provided by Prestone) in my '03 Sonata's V6 aluminum cooling system. On a 4 1/2 hour trip to Las Vegas last week in 113 degree heat, the temperature gauge needle never budged from its customary warmed engine spot even while climbing several extended 4% grades (nearly ten miles in one case) at 70 mph with the air conditioner roaring away full blast in "Arctic Blizzard" mode. Good stuff and only $6.88/gallon. If you're still under OEM warranty or extended service contract provisions, though, better stick with the Toyota brew to avoid hassles with the dealer. If you do decide to experiment, flush ALL the current coolant out with distilled water before making a product substitution. Dilute the new brew only with distilled water. Introducing hard water minerals into a cooling system should be a capital offense.

As was pointed out, there is no aftermarket coolant that is formulated like the Toyota/Nissan/Honda coolants. They have no silicate, but they do have a dose of phosphates.

Zerex (Ashland/Valvoline) offers the three major types of aftermarket coolants:

http://www.englefieldoil.com/PDF/Zerex_chart.pdf

which are G-05, DexCool-type, and traditional green coolants.

They recommend their DexCool clone and Nissan, but G-05 for Honda. Honda has some concerns about the inhibitor in DexCool clones, which they believe may cause gasket failure.

I think a good case can be made for either the G-05 HOAT coolants or the DexCool clones, each of which has their own advantages and disadvantages.

Either should work okay in the Toyota.

I put G-05 in my wife's Camry.

Good info Gents, thanks......

A Prestone Tech Rep told me their New, All Makes, All Models, All Colors formula will work just fine with no warrenty issues.

Any thoughts please......

sorry... but anyone know what about other Japanese manufacturer like Mazda, Subaru, Mitsubushi? What coolants do they use? Thanks!

Mitsubishi, Hyundai, and most others have been using a conventional green coolant.

When in doubt do a complete flush and use G-05.

It has most of the advantages of the DexCool type coolants but is less sensitive to cavitation due to low dose of silicate.

Their coolant appears to be a DexCool clone.

In cars for which DexCool is either not appropriate - like diesels - or not recommended - like Honda - I think you could wind up with warranty issues.

I can get BMW Coolant and MB Coolant, can I use those in my Toyota, after flushing the old ones of course.

MB coolant is G-05. It does pretty much what the Toyota coolant does with the small amount of silicate doing what the phosphate does in the Toyota.

The BMW is G-48. It's nearly the same thing as G-05 and would do about the same job.

I'd be sure to completely get all the Toyota coolant out of the system before adding either.
