Toyota Corolla High Cold Idle Speed Question

For you Corolla (1ZZ-FE with auto trans) owners out there or anyone who knows, what's the cold idle speed supposed to be? On my wife's 2003 Corolla, cold idle is around 1700-1800 rpms which seems too high to me. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

My 2005 Manual Trans corolla revs to 1600-1800 and sits there for i'd say 2-3 mins if it's below 40 degrees.

Toyota USA says its for the Cat to warm up quicker.

Thank the EPA...

My used oil analysis don't show any wear from it so I'm not worried.

Noisy little chatterbox especially when cold...sounds like the valves or injectors are gonna jump through the hood!

Thanks Bill, I feel much better now. I was planning on doing a used oil analysis for the same reason.

It's just a little disconcerting to hear/feel that little motor churning so fast just after startup!

My sister's euro Corolla ('05, 1.4 liter, manual transmission) does it also. Revs up to around 2K rpm and stays there for about a minute or so, IIRC.

That was a helpful link, thanks. I didn't know it was a common thing with late-model Toyotas. I too will put my faith in the engineers at Toyota while cursing the EPA!

I have a 2003 corolla (auto) and it does idle high when cold but quickly adjusts. I would not worry about it. The 2003 corolla is just a nails, the thing runs so well it is scary.
