Toyota Composite Oil Filter Cap STUCK - Any guidance?

What temperature is "wam"? It would be interesting to compare how 0W30 "dumps" when at the same temperature. I bet it's quite similar to the 0W20 at operational temperatures.
Whatever temp it is to start - come off high idle - climb ramps … Then stage the oil, filter, tools …

... Even if it does, I will probably get a genuine Toyota cap.
I called the dealer; they quoted me $80 something for the composite; they do have them in stock. Crazy.
Verily! The spare composite one I bought from an on-line Toyota dealer was about $24, as I recall.

I ordered the Scion cast aluminum oil filter housing from Toyota online.
PN 15620-40030 Cap Assembly, Oil Filter was $13.79
PN 15643-31050 Plug, Oil Filter Drain was $4.41
With the governor's tax, $19.91 delivered to Stevens Creek Toyota.

The Dorman composite cap looks fine; I would use it in a pinch. I measured the Dorman and the Toyota and everything lined up.

That’s a great price you paid. We installed a Dorman one on my moms car it’s doing just fine. We don’t hardly keep the metal Toyota ones in stock at work if we break one it gets another plastic one. I typically don’t use Dorman stuff but I’ve used multiple of these housings with no issues so I didn’t mind putting the Dorman on. Had it been a plastic Dorman I’d have passed. That Dorman cap you pictured doesn’t have a drain in the bottom. That is used on certain engines only that take the 04152-YZZA6 filters and are mounted sideways instead of up and down. However I think it would work if you didn’t care about it the drain being there.

Hopefully you can get the old one off. I wish I was there to help you out.

Most of the techs I work with don't bother with the drain, they just unscrew the cap in one piece. Probably they want to save time, but I've never found it necessary to use it.

My understanding is the YZZA6 and YZZA7 filters difference is, the A7 has the drain plug seal.
C'mon over to California. We'd love to have a fine young man like yourself. Killer burritos, killer cars. And lot's of work for mechanics!
I am considering using the Mikita cordless impact, short bursts, to break torque on the stuck filter. Probably one day next week.

Yeah definitely don’t pressure it too hard with the impact. I hope it doesn’t decide to break off at the threads like one we had one time haha. Hopefully it will break free.

Start with the softest torque and give it time. Longer bursts at lower torque. Thats where an air tool is handy, you can manipulate air pressure a lot.

I have 2 good filter removal tools; one has the slots, the other is an actual Toyota product. It does not have the slots, only the flutes. I will see which one fits tighter. I will also sandwich a sheet of printer paper between the tool and housing. The paper is somewhat abrasive; slipping leads to trouble. Probably try the long breaker first. If the vehicle was on a lift, access with a long length of bar would be much better.
If I use the Makita I will take it easy.

This filter design is lousy; it is prone to removal problems. The Toyota parts counter guy smiled when I told him the problem. He's heard this story before. Ha! All good.

Well … decided to open the box on my spare cap - and Wut ? It’s a Dorman 😱
Threads look like part of an investment casing with the o ring region machined …
I might clean up the threads with Emory cloth …

If you keep the rubber gasket well oiled or greased, (grease is better because it won't dry out during long OCI intervals), there won't be an issue with using them.
^^^This! A thoroughly lubed o-ring on the cap allows for easy removal during the next change. I've yet to have a stubborn cap ever since lubing it good and plenty before installing.

Regarding the drain/lack of a drain feature: If a guy can actually get the cap loose, it will drain faster if he turns the cap so that flat area of the threads is parallel to the ground.

My experience is with a 2010 Vibe 1.8, horizontal filter with no drain. The Toyota composite cap (and the replacement I had on hand just in case) both had the flat area also.

For under $20 I got a new genuine Toyota housing. Why use a Dorman?
As stated it’s a spare - did not know it was Dorman and being sarcastic over that being treated like Lucas here -
I don’t think that Toyota’s composite is magical either … I’ll polish up the aluminum threads - and if ever needed would not be afraid to use …
