Techs do a lot of things that go against the official instructions. Not saying that they are correct or incorrect. This thread was created to discuss best practices set forth by Toyota.
I first heard the washing rotors with soapy water about 10 or so years ago from one of our techs. He heard it at Ford school and said once he switched to that method he had a lot less issues with noise. I have tried to do it since. It gets hard with the big rotors though.
I am not sure if I have been doing it wrong or not, I apply silicone grease on the caliper piston/boot I do not use brake grease with oils or solids because it can swell up the boots.
Also, the guide states not to use shim grease on the brake hardware. That could also mean use other type of grease to lube or to not lube at all.
I've seen / heard of people that do that. Silicone-type stuff is pretty harmless so I doubt it's an issue. I'd just keep it only on the face of the piston itself, not on the boot.
