No idea why the Toyota engines are failing, but at 3.45L and 385HP, they are not out of the norm with regard to HP per displacement or HP per cylinder. Ford's 3.5EB makes as much as 450HP in stock form.

However, when you see "just" rod bearings fail, it is likely a combo of design insufficiency coupled with an oil related issue. Many modern engines use considerably larger diameter rod bearings to avoid problems.

In the case of the Toyota 3.5L turbo, not only does the #1 rod bearing fail but the front main bearing also failed. That may indicate insufficient oil flow here.

And the 3.0L Hurricane is up to 540HP

considering the HIGH cost of vehicles these days, they should be reliable + newer is usually WORSE due to its complexity IMO!!

The excuse worked for Hyundai and to some extent still works for them, so it will work for Toyota too.

The excuse never worked for HyunKia Inc.
Some of their dealerships didn't need four outside walls these past several years. New dealerships walls could have been built using all the replaced engines that still remain stacked 10 feet high at the rears of some dealerships.

Nothing works fine when replacing millions of engines. Had they not been technology leaders in everything associated with passenger vehicles that's not under the hood, well, they would have been out of business by now.

S58 in BMW is currently hovering around 580hp, and proved to be really reliable, and tunable. I know B58 on OE internals is going for 900+hp with good tunes.

I’ll bet it has large rod bearings and uses something other than 0w-20

Actually B58 is 0W20, S58 is LL01FE, which would be BMW version of ILSAC, HTHS up to 3.49.
But, most people run LL01/04.

Its so funny how the standard excuse for all of them is left over machining debris.
If so that will rear its ugly head much sooner than many of the talked about problems do.
Kia first to use that excuse now Toyota and Honda?

All the more reason to change your oil/filter early on a new vehicle.

Those tight tolerances, reduced bearing area for lower friction, thinner oil film thickness at hydrodynamic separation, higher horsepower from smaller engines. Oh ya, that should all work 100% fine 100% of the time.

If it truly is debris in the engine, why doesn’t it spin the rod bearing, or even throw a rod? A spun main seems pretty rare, unless tolerances are way off, or there is absolutely no oil getting to the front of the crankshaft (which is honestly my guess from the way the engine in the video looks-#1 main & rod caps are COOKED!).

I've been watching too many VGG and Junkyard Digs videos. You need a hermetically sealed barn--or at least one sealed against vermin.

I've seen some posts that say even engines from Japan have the issue. So really debris is everywhere these days. Honda has it, Kia has it, now Toyota has it. Rule 1 never blame the design, or engineering.

Oh and that is my favorite video, he shows absolutely nothing, just a short block with heat damage like you say.
Due to the warranty pay they get for all that I just bet none of the removed parts get cleaned.
I like the story's from some people that have had this done, talk about, it was a few days or weeks it happens again.

I was disappointed the rod and main caps were not removed. I'm sure after a few done those mechanics start getting the time down on the repair.

Agree with that.

I think I know some of the things that are causing the problems, it would likely be an expensive fix too.

This is NOT a toyota. Its just another one on the list of engine problems, all similar to each other.

This video shows how fast the job is completed, he said in the comments a better part of the day to do it. If I was doing that job it would take much longer.

I wonder if dropping the FF as soon as you get home from the dealer and then again at 500 miles would have helped. I better hide.
