I have a 2002 Toyota Tacoma with the 3.4L V6. I can't remember the model of the filter that came on it from the factory, but the replacement they said superseded it is Toyota 90915-YZZB5. I have used that filter on my last 3 oil changes and just ordered a case of 10. However, I've read hear and other places that these filters do not have a bypass valve. I'm curious as to why this is the case. Has Toyota started putting these bypass valves in the engines? Is it not needed in this filter design for some reason? Is it actually there but not a "traditional" bypass valve that people would recognize when opening one up?

Any info would be appreciated. I've experienced no problems using these, but I'm just curious. Thanks!

Why the Toyota filter? Whats a case running?

Cut the filter apart to see if has the bypass.
 
I got them for under $4 per filter. Even so, hate to waste one. Besides, I wouldn't know a bypass from a hole in the ground.
 
The new filter has a few minor differences from the old, one being the bypass valve was moved from the bottom to the top of the filter. If you were to compare the old filter and the new one without cracking it open, one would assume that they removed the bypass valve. Rest assured,Toyota would not "cheap out" and remove the bypass valve and risk damage to your engine.

Yes, those are the recommended filter, and when I cut one open I didn't see any bypass valve. The other filter that many use on those engines is the Toyota/Lexus 90915-20004. This is the filter on the engine when it comes from the factory. It has a bit more filter capacity and has a bypass valve in the bottom. Both filters are Denso's unusual design where the media is a 2mm-3mm thick fiberglass mat material over a plastic skeleton and bonded with some resin material. The 90915-YZZB5 will work fine. Every Toyota & Lexus V6 and V8 that gets an oil change at all the dealerships gets one of these filters (well, some of the V6 engines might call for a different filter).

$4 is a good price.
Don't waste one. Cut open a used filter.

I figured that it has a bypass. Just installed one in a Tundra. Won't see that vehicle for 6 months and then will murder that used filter.

I too have heard the "no bypass" rumour but would not believe it since noone claiming this would post a picture.

The camry 4 cyl uses the smaller filter.
If that filter fits, you could use it if you want.
 
I found this really informational post on another forum this morning. It seems that while the YZZB5 doesn't have a spring-loaded bypass valve, it does accomplish bypass by another means.

Both filters utilize a matted type of filter media instead of the traditional pleated paper type material. Overall size of the filter elements is approximately the same size. Both filters utilize an anti-drain back valve in the top of the filter. The -20004 filter has 12 raised ribs around its circumference whereas the -YZZB5 has 9 raised ribs of the same size. The -20004 has a metal/spring bypass valve in the bottom of the filter element whereas the -YZZB5 has more filter media there (maybe to compensate for the 9 vs. 12 ribs). The -YZZB5 has 3 bypass ports incorporated into the top of the filter media frame and anti-drainback valve. While I wouldn't consider this a true bypass valve, it will effectively function as one. There are three 1/8"x3/8" ports cut into the top of the filter element frame that are blocked off by the lip of the anti-drain back valve. With sufficient differential pressure across the ports, the rubber valve will yield to bypass excess pressure. While this isn't likely as precise as the -20004 spring loaded bypass valve, it apparently works just fine except possibly when there are excessive amounts of contaminants present (like on a new engine during the initial break-in period or after an engine rebuild).
 
Which one is listed as the part for your Camry? My Tacoma is listed as an 08922-02011, but my dealership sells/uses the YZZB5 instead just like they do on the Tundra V8s. They said Toyota put out a memo that the YZZB5 replaces the original--and that they were trying to consolidate filter models. I don't know the validity of that--but I know this filter works fine in my vehicle.

It definitely has a bypass, and I've been using them on my '94 V6 Toy 4x4 PU for the last year. I remain very impressed. I'm currently at 870 miles in the second phase of an AuoRX treatment, and the oil is cleaner than it was using "standard" oil filters, including Mobil 1. The oil actually got cleaner just changing the filter after the rinse phase.

I would store your case of filters in the coolest, driest place you can find (not on a floor or in a fridge) to inhibit corrosion before you use them.

I cut open the filter I photographed within a week of getting it from the dealer, and rust had already started on the back plate, which is clearly visible in the photos. In this particular filter there is no exposed metal downstream of the element, so any rust that does form and dislodge should be trapped by the element. To some this makes rust a mute point.

From what I've seen oil filters corrode quickly on the inside. Most of the internal metal is exposed and without any rust inhibitors and any moisture that gets in the filter is trapped inside by the ADBV and the element.

As far as storage, I think it depends on the climate. Here in Texas I don't buy filters more than a month or three before I need them. If I lived in Arizona I'd feel better about stashing 2 years worth, but I probably wouldn't do it. I'm only saving a dollar or two per filter, and ensuring a clean filter seems worth far more than that to me.

I store my filters inside the air conditioned portion of our house on a mid level shelf. It's exposed to much less moisture and fewer temperature changes than a garage.

BUT, all that being said, I would still use a filter stored for a long time, even in a garage, as long as no rust is visible downstream of the element or outside of the backplate. If the filter had any metal that could hide rust from visual inspection and be downstream of the element I'd toss it. If rust is visible on the outside, it seems a safe bet that there's a lot inside. More than I would trust the element to remove.

The exception is my Lexus. Fresh filters only please.

Hmm... I never thought about corrosion. It is going to take me 5 years to use these 10 filters. Is that bad? How long does it take for these things to corrode? I never considered the shelf life of a filter. Storing them in the garage on a shelf isn't good enough?
 
I've got a new 2003 2.4L 4 cyl. Camry in Houston TX. Just made the mistake of changing the oil for the first time using to thick Shell Rotella T Synthetic 5w-40 with a Mobil 1 filter.

I Plan on going to Mobil 1, 5w30 next, but what filter should I go with? Will the Shell Rotella T 5w-40 hurt the 4 cyl. till the next change?
