Bought a couple of these from an asian seller on ebay, i thought they would have the cellulose media but they don't, kinda weird, seem well built though.

How can you tell what the media is?

Did these come in Toyota boxes with the little hologram sticker on the box lid?

So if it was a synthetic or a synthetic blend you could tell from peering through some tiny holes?

Yes you can tell,,,a full synthetic media like a Amsoil EAO, RP,FG,etc will show white media and the wire backing holding it, a standard cellulose media like shown above will show brown/yellow.

The ones I have, have a red valve, red o-ring, a better finish, and a nylon inner cage. McGeorge Toyota sells them online for about $10. They were $8. I bought a dozen to lower the per piece shipping. The element inside is a hard sponge like stuff.

In a search for 90915-10004 on the web, a number of Chinese made knockoffs appear, but at least they don't fake the whole thing.

Pretty sure of it, unless Denso makes a lesser version. They may for the Asian market. Personally I would be hesitant to use.

Ebay items from Asia are really suspect unless one knows the seller.

The OEM Toyota filter I took off my sister's RAV4 at its first oil change looked exactly like those pictures except it had a silicone ADBV. The aftermarket ones I buy at the Toyota dealer have the P-ring gasket and the cellophane seal, but not the torque-stopper ring, and they have a nitrile ADBV.

The one in the pix looks like a hybrid of OEM and aftermarket...

Just to correct my first post, apparently McGeorge Toyota isn't selling these anymore, according to my bookmarked link. They are sought after by the Lotus crowd as the filter to use.

I have a carton of the Thailand ones also, they are original, not aftermarket. Both kinds are torque stopper. The Japanese ones have red o-ring and nylon cage, very nice finish on the baseplate and threads.

These pictured here look somewhat authentic on the paint job, maybe they are Toyota Asia. But they make Rolexes almost identical LOOKING also, it isn't hard to fake logos these days with computers. Original Toyota filters have a foil logo seal on the box now, like someone else asked, which shows how bad the pirating situation is in China.

I think you have been had. The media in the ones from Japan looks reddish and "spongy." There are no pleats in the ones made in Japan. The o-ring is reddish-orange as is the anti-drain ring. I buy by the case from a dealer ship in New Mexico. PM me if you want to know where. I'll post phone and Contact info here if a moderator tells me it is okay.

I bught a case of fake ones that were only $5 each. What a steal, I said! Man, if it seems to good to be true.... Everytime I go to my stash I look at that box of fake ones i am reminded of what an ignorant person I was. Especially, when I glance over to my workbench and look at the one I cut open. They have all the correct writing, Toyota box, etc. Matter of fact, I'm gonna go and through them away right now. Enough torture...
