I don't own a Toyota, but help service some for friends. I know the 5w-20 Toyota question has come up before, so please tolerate another one.

The TSB I read seemed to back-spec 5w-20 for 'MZ' engines without qualification. Does this include all 1MZ and 3MZ engines?

Let's not worry about 1MZ engines from 1997-99. How about 2000+

The specific case that raised this question in my mind: How about a 3MZ in a 2004 Sienna? Is it officially allowed to use 5w-20 by Toyota?

TIA

The TSB is confusing, some of the engines the 5W-20 is spec'd for is during the midlife of the engine, even though no mechanical changes have been done.

Right, the 2AZ-FE 0w-20 spec begins with the 2006 model year, and specific vehicles are mentioned, but for 5w-20 I don't see a model year, and the engines listed are:
AZ series
GR series
JZ series
MZ series
NZ series
RZ series
UZ series
VZ series
1ZZ–FE
2TR–FE

As I read it, 2006+ model year is when 0w-20 is approved for the 2AZ-FE.

It appears the 5w-20 list covers the AZ series without specifying a model year, as it does the MZ series I am asking about.

The TSB

Increase in oil sump size. Same with the 1ZZ-FE.

I have a 2006 vs. 2007 Camry technical analysis by Toyota... here is what it says:

"Water jacket spacers are provided in the water jacket of the cylinder block.

They suppress the water flow in the center of the water jackets, guide the coolant above and below the cylinder bores, and ensure uniform temperature distribution. As a result, the viscosity of the engine oil that acts a lubricant between the bore walls and the pistons can be lowered, thus reducing friction."
