This is a "known issue" with the Toyota 5.7 found in the Tundra and Land Cruiser \ LX570.

Does anyone have experience or opinions on this?

Is it as big of a deal as the internet would have you think?

As an owner of the 5.7 here’s my take. If it develops and it is still under warranty, then sure, Toyota can fix it. If it’s not under warranty and it’s just a weep, I’m not worried at all. If it’s more than just a weep then I’ll check my oil level more frequently but I’m not paying several thousand dollars to fix something I can remedy with a quart of oil every now and then. I’ve read about people losing their minds over what is weeping at best because they obsessively want their truck to be perfect but unless it’s losing significant oil, I just do not see the cost benefit if you are paying out of pocket.

So would you say minimal chance of damage to other components?

Zero, unless you let the oil level run low. I’ve actually never seen one that was a serious leak. I’m sure they exist but what I’ve seen and read about are mostly dampness, not even drips. Again, I’m sure they exist but I’m under the impression they are in the extreme minority and most are minor. If I’m wrong, someone please correct me.

The Internet tends to bias towards bad news about something.

I don’t care what the product or service is, the people complaining about it are a whole lot louder and more prolific than the people that are happy with it.

I know a couple of guys with Tundras, and mine is just about to turn 80,000 miles. Not every Tundra is going to have this problem.

If mine does, I’ll be certain to let everybody know, but over eight years of ownership, this has been the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned.

That 5.7 is one of the highlights of the truck. Runs great, sounds good, makes good power if you’re towing something.

The only complaint is that that engine with that transmission, and 4.30 rear end, gets a little thirsty.

My 4.7 weeped. As did the valve covers… all at 135k miles and counting. It still didn’t use enough oil per 7500 mile oci, with regular heavy towing, to need top-offs. I changed the valve cover gaskets with fel-pro and felt good about it. That engine was a piece of art. It was not worth trying to do the tower seals.

The 4.7L 2UZ-FE didn't have cam towers like the UR V8's & GR V6's.

I mean really....it would seem as the issue is inflated. The 5.7 is known to be a reliable engine, if many had to be disassembled to fix suxh a major flaw, I am sure it would not be such a successful platform.

Is it an issue, sure, maybe. Is it an issue that would lead to anything of consequence, maybe, but so is eating at Mc Donalds.

It could be argued that the UR & GR engines that do leak badly are likely a result of a botched repair to correct slight weeping.

I hate to say this, But....Most Mechanics like to sell big jobs, Very few enjoy doing big jobs.

So the consensus seems to be: yes it is an issue, but not that big of a deal?
