My 2001 Corolla 4 speed auto gets anywhere from 33-37 with mixed city 40% / highway 60%. We are at 5600 feet above sea level and the auto is fine.

I doubt I will go older than 5 years old though (probably can't stay inside the $5k budget). I can't see replacing a 10 year old car with an even older car. I *think* Matrix had some bearing issues in the stick. I know the Pontiac Vibe is its sister vehicle, so I do know to cross shop that. I think I'm going to email my insurance rep and see what the insurance prices are between these vehicles, see if there is a large gap.
I'm actually leaning towards a sedan this time. It's weird, I've long liked station wagons. But my truck is my wagon now, this commuter is purely for commuting. It seems weird but I think I want a sedan.
I wasn't suggesting you go get an old Corolla or anything! Just pointing out the performance difference between manual and automatic equipped Corollas.

Haters gonna hate! I just had to do a bunch of highway driving recently, and on summer gas the Prizm in my sig gets 37mpg going 65-75 w/ 2-3 adults in the car. The worst mileage (winter gas + lots of city traffic) is about 25mpg. The car has the 4sp and it does everything I've asked of it. The car cost me about $5000 in 2009 with about 80K miles IIRC.
My dad has an older 1999 3sp Corolla, and while it gets worse mileage the AT is working fine despite it never being serviced (not even fluid changes). Can't go wrong w/ an Aisin unit.
