FWIW it was totally neglected, ticking but still running. The word "bullet proof" applies - even more IMO.

I looked at a Corolla once with an owner that had that very attitude. It was smoking bad, had done 60,000km and had never seen an oil change. He truly believed that such engine damage could not be caused by not changing the oil. As it ran perfect up to when it died, he thought the oil must be fine. Sort of like, if the hinges on your garden shed squeak, give it some oil. But if they don't, oiling it is a waste of money. This guy had never taken a car he owned for a regular oil change but he said he would take in his cars when they needed attention. New cars are a victim if their own reliability.

On my morning ride to work, I rode alongside a woman with an 06-09 RX350 that sounded like a helicopter, CHUNG-CHUNG-CHUNG-CHUNG. I looked at her and made a frowny face. She probably has no idea why.

If it used 5w20 like most Japanese cars use, you wouldn't have so much sludge. We all know thick oil creates more sludge

GREAT observation!

So true.

Honestly when is the last time you heard the phrase
"preventative maintenance" used when looking at various posts in many car forums, except BITOG, I never hear that term used when you visit the local dealer, or chain repair shops.

This is interesting.
I once bought a mid '80s Civic Wagon that had either a cracked head or a bad head gasket, based upon the oil leak into one cylinder and the episodic overheating.
I bought the car for cheap, and intended to fix it by putting in a Japanese take-out engine.
I ordered the engine, and it arrived complete with a compression test strip, a new timing belt and water pump, which you were supposed to install prior to installing the engine to preserve the warranty offered by the seller, and a load of sludge visible through the oil fill hole that I had never before seen on a Honda engine.
This was supposed to have been a ~35K engine.
I installed the thing in the car, and with no more than 3K changes of any oil I got on sale, it cleaned up nicely.
I put about 40K on the engine, and the guy I sold the car to ran it well past 200K.
With heavy chemical intervention, this Toyota might have been saved, but it may also have been past the point where any fluid could have saved it.
It does look bad.
