Okay, I have been doing a lot of reading and have considered using 0w20 in my 2003 camry. I am not sure why other then increasing fuel economy. Any thoughts, I am using PYB 5w30, I thinking about this since most 5w30's sheer down to a 20 weight anyways. I not sure at this point, is this a silly idea or one that may payoff with fuel economy, or will I lose some serious protection to my engine. I haven't done it yet, but I am considering it. The 2005 camry was back spec to 5w20, the engines are the same, except I have a 2003.
 
You will not loose any protection. Your engine will be fine, maybe better. The toyota 0w-20 is supposedly relaly good stuff.
 
However, unless you raise your oil change interval over what you're doing with PYB, the gain, if any, in fuel economy will not make up the difference in the cost difference between the oils.
 
I am going about 3750 OCI at this point, a some stop and go. I am drive about 75/80 MPH 17 miles each way.

I wouldn't go thinner just to try to get a little better gas mileage. The engine was designed to run on X-30 and you should stick with it.

This is what I would do, though I'd also run an UOA just to be safe. I don't see why you wouldn't be able to do 10kmi OCI's when all is said and done.
 
Give it a try.
You'll be using an oil with the lowest start-up viscosity available. Not only will it save fuel but if you're like me you'll also notice the increased pep paricularly when the engine is cold.
You can always go back to using a 5W-30 dino.
 
Toyota just raised the OCI's with the in house 0W20 synthetic to 1 year or 10K miles. BTW severe duty is still 5K OCI.
 
I am gone to stick with the PYB 5w30 or FS 5w30.

Looks like your fear mongering worked.


My '00 MB E430 is running Synpower 5W20 while the recommended is M1 0W40 and the engine is much quieter with 2 grades thinner.

NO. I dont know how the OP drives and I cannot recommend a lighter viscosity oil. Again laws of physics - if he's very hard on the engine it is more likely to beat up the bearings and skirts with the lighter oil. I have no love for 5w-30, I think its a terrible oil and 5w-20 should be more stable and cleaner, but I have only seen it work well in the ford modular applications. When I was out at lunch tyesterday, a woman drove through the parking lot in a newer Honda Element and that engine was toast - knocking like crazy. But she just went on her way - completely immune.
 
I've heard & seen lots of engines knocking and smoking over the years. Not knowing the person or the maint history of the car tells tells little or absolutely nothing. It is quite possible that Element you saw had little to no oil in it, or the oil wasn't ever changed. Having worked in 2 Honda dealerships, I saw thousands of Hondas running 5W20 spec'd oil with no problems at all. My bet is the Element was neglected, and her knock had nothing to do with oil, it probably had to do with the lack of it. JMO
 
Maybe they should make the engine "not start" if the oil hasnt been checked in 2K miles. Of course that wouldnt teach anyone how to read the stick

LOL my guess is cars would last a lot longer......
