Blown away by this town's support for used oil. Open 363 days per year, yes 363 days per year. 7am to 5pm. Back right up and unload. Town also offers a dumpster for used oil containers.

Nice to see a town that truly wants to serve it's residents. So much easier than trying to dump oil at the auto parts store.

I am jealous.

When I lived in Kentucky, there was a nice recycle center that was open to the public. It had bins for all kinds of recycle items, including tanks for motor oil and coolant. It was so convenient. I miss it so much.

@GON, you made me pucker up by posting that picture of all those oil containers inside the back of the SUV! Even with the plastic sheeting, I would be fearful of some oil leaking onto the upholstery. I'd expect you to transport the oil to the recycling station in one of your Ford trucks.
Great observation. Issue was the trucks are empty, so I would have to secure the used oil containers. The GX470 had cargo in the rear, and the used oil containers just barely fit- which made for what I hoped was the least risk transport.

I am taking my Wife out to dinner tonight. If the GX470 smells like oil I will have a problem.

Nice. It's nearly impossible to get rid of it here
You can drop off used coolant at the Apple Valley Public Works Yardin Apple Valley, California, which is a Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) facility:

13450 Nomwaket Road, Apple Valley, CA 92307
Saturdays from 10 AM to 2 PM, except on holidays
(760) 240-7000, ext. 7522

We have an excellent dump in Chambers Co. TX. The word "dump" is misleading. Its all paved, covered, and segregated. Our oil and filter collection is about 4X as large as the top pic. We have separate areas for used tires, appliances, batteries, brush and limbs, heavy trash, and household trash goes in a compactor. It is spread over an acre and has multiple drop off lanes to drive through. A permit costs $50 for 2 years.

Its expensive overkill by our wild spending county government, but it really is a good facility.

I have two similar sites close to me open all year. Easy to discard oil, antifreeze and filters.
The local landfill also has a site for old kerosene, gasoline and such.

The nearby one to me (Shady Grove in Gaithersburg) takes everything - paper, used oil, hydraulic fluid, antifreeze, paint, batteries, chemicals, metal stuff/appliances, old TVs & bikes, plain garbage, lawn waste, etc. No charge to the public for anything pickup truck sized or smaller.

I was blown away when helping my MIL out in Pennsylvania that no such place exists. What the hell are people supposed to do with all this stuff? I guess they dump it in the woods or mix it in with their regular trash?

We had a good recycling center south east of us in TN. They took oil and antifreeze, along with trash and recycling. It got hit pretty bad during Helene as it's along the Nolichucky river. We're not sure it will reopen. 😟

For all of my complaints about IL, they do HHW pickup very well, at least around Chicago. There are a couple of permanent sites that are open weekends to drop off waste.

@GON that really is awesome.

I was impressed that ~20 years ago our county released a publication pointing residents to all the local businesses or places that could help them dispose of such things. IOW it was just a printed resource guide.

Haven't seen a reprint since....

About once a year they have an electronics collection drive. Many years ago they had a one-day tire collection drive -- all tires accepted no charge. The wife and I actually grabbed a few off the road shoulder and took them in.

Phila suburbs and work in NJ. Nobody wants used motor oil. I gave up on auto parts, but have found oil changers, > 50% chance.

On Sat Jiffy Lube took two 5 qt jugs, and a service station took 1.

Jiffy Lube said it’s Bs for auto parts to refuse, but it is what it is.

In all seriousness, do they verify residency? Like if I were to have 3 five quart jugs, or even 5. Yes I live in PA.

I thought the auto part stores liked to take used oil to get a person in their store. Guess tiles are changing.

If they're supposed to take it, contact DM. All the chains here do, but I imagine it varies by state law.
