Does anyone think this really matter?

I like Chevron but it costs $2.15+

for Regulars where I live now.

Chevron is supposedly the cleanest gas (according to the ads I view

)
but, Texaco, their sister company, is not even considered Top Tier? What gives? I thought they would share the same facility and sell the same product to save cost.

According the TopTierGas.com, these are the current TopTier stations:

QuikTrip
Chevron
Conoco
Phillips
76
Shell
Entec Stations
MFA Oil Company

Any thoughts on Murphy USA? They give 3 cents off a gal for a Wal Mart Credit Card. I hate to admit it but I have one of those...

Locally, there is no such thing as a cleaner gas. All the gas come from the same refineries and the same tanks at the refineries. THe only difference is additives that may be added in at the tanker loading docks. The only one I know of locally that has an additive is Mobil. All of the other stations have the same gas without the additive.

Do you mean where you live or this is a genenal statement for everywhere?

Jonny, Be glad Chevron's not close to $2.60, like it is out here. I've decided to make a long term switch to a top tier fuel to see if I can tell a difference in MPG and idle smoothness. So I'm going with Chevron 89 octane for a while.
Medic: Are you suggesting Top Tier is not what they claim? I'm not really sure what to think myself. The way it reads on the Top Tier website, it sounds like it is required to contain 10% ethanol. I don't want that, do I?

all gasoline has to have atleast a minimum of additives, it's federal law.

even top tier....isnt safe

in the northwest, i tihnk in seattle?
76 stations had huge issues with some kind of polymer in their gas that clogged injectors?

i'm looking for the article...

Yes, but the method in which detergent additives are blended into gasoline is basically hit or miss.

Does anyone seriously believe that the additives, dumped into the tanker compartments at the terminal rack, get completely blended with every gallon in the tanker load?

Last September we had an episode of fuel injector failures in SE Wisconsin, ultimately traced to solid contaminants from the ethanol manufacturing process - (ethanol is the oxygenate).

And during the followup investigation, one of the major brands, in repeat samples, turned out to be well short of the federal minimums for detergent additives.

The filling station itself I've found is more important than anything else in getting clean fuel. Most of the time, what's on the delivery truck is OK. But some station's tanks are not as well maintained, or have the same moisture-tight integrity, as others. I seen more than one instance locally where a bad local station got nailed for selling water contaminated fuel and/or dumping contaminated gasoline.

Find a good local station that you can trust. If they've got top tier compliant fuels, all the better.
