I need to get the oil filter of a `07 Corolla and can't for the life of me get the thing to loosen! It's the factory one since this is the first oil change, they must really crank those things on.

None of my oil filter wrenches will fit since it's on the small side. I've had some tough oil filters to get off in my life but eventually they loosened up, anyone use anything special for this particular filter?

I bought a simple oil filter tool at Wal-Mart that you attach to your rachet and tightens or loosens any size oil filter. I'm one who believes oil filters are generally useless appendages on vehicles except for catastropic failures. Because of that I will always buy Fram oil filters (even with all the bad smack) because of the "sure-grip" design. It's easy changing oil....just spin off the old filter and put on the new one....no tools required.

I got a pair of Filter Pliers at Harbor Freight for about 8 bucks that will take off any filter made. They have an angled head to get in even the tightest spaces, and teeth at the end of the rounded plier to grip the filter. I got them when I bought a used car and couldn't get the Orange Can Of Death off with a ratchet style filter cup. Best money I ever spent on a tool, since most of my buddies put their filter on too tight, and then expect me to get them off for them....

And if you get really stuck some Saturday morning and not of the regular tools work, get a big screwdriver and pound it through the filter and it will turn. I had to do that on a brand new Prius. A big screwdriver with a big hammer will fit any sized filter. If in doubt get angry and try it.

My dad had the same issue with my mom's new 2007 Camry. He had a heck of a time getting it off and ended up having to run a screwdriver through it and totally destroy it getting it off. This is a guy that has been working on his own cars to for 40 years, and is fastidious about not forcing things.

I own just about every kind of oil filter tool imaginable, and the very best and most effective one I own for using on the end-cap looks like this.

I love that tool. The more filter-loosening force you apply, the more the cam in the tool tightens onto the filter.

If you can fit one in, a strap with sandpaper works well, but I often have clearance issues with this kind.

They have metal filter caps at Pep Boys on which you can use a standard 3/8 socket wrench to either put a new filter into your car or take an old filter out of your car.

Thanks for the tips guys, I will check with Harbor Freight and also Jim 5's idea. Jim, do you happen to remember where you purchased that tool, looks great!

what I did on my 06 vibe, that toyota filter was a beast to get off, put a paper towel around the filter, then put the $2 filter wrench on top of it for more grip. Used my torque wrench. came right off easy. That filter was on so tight even my filter wrench was slipping off

I bought one of these at Autozone....it takes off ANY filter no matter how tight...I took a filter off my friends Ford truck and needed a 1/2 breaker bar with adapter (thanks jiffy lube) to rip the welded on filter off. This tool actually collapsed the filter it was so tight but then it moved that 1/16th of an inch and gave in. I swear by it and it fits any filter anywhere anytime.

The Corrola has to have one of the the best oil filter placements in the industry. I too, had a hard time on the first attempt as the "dixie-cup" size proved to be a challenge to my weak tool selection. I will say that the so expertly pictured LISLE 63600 above should be your ONLY choice. I originally bought the cup- type that fits over the end, but due to different manufacturers and different sizes, it won't work on all. Wix 51394 as factory spec.,or as I prefer the slightly longer Wix 51396. Just like the good Dr. HAAS states, "smarter people learn from others' mistakes"!
