Sadly, times are just rough here in MI. Here is a good example.

On Friday someone hacked the Catalytic converter off of my 2004
Cavalier (which is my "baby") They made a quick cut cut, and it was gone. 400 bucks later, it's back in good shape again. I'm really afraid that someone is going to come back and do it again...which sucks I don't have a garage to put it in. (Until we get a house in the spring) While losing the money sucks, it feels even worse because I feel "violated". Poor car. I have moved her around to see if that will help. Also have been fighting with my complex, which at this rate, might get me kicked out

(I'm a pretty quiet guy here) because they aare not planning to do anything. It is kind of leaving me at wit's end.

And driving me to drink ( iced tea, anyways

)

Any good advice you guys can offer?

How much are they paying there for scrap cats? Only worth $.02 a lb here. I found a car that had been pushed off a cliff. I pulled the cat off with a hacksaw and took it in.

Lotta work for a dime.

Not sure..can't be that much for a cavalier though...

I'm surprised they didn't pick an easier target. Cavaliers are fairly low to the ground and would probably need a jack to crawl under. You'd think they would've picked a truck or a Jeep.

The "good news" is aftermarket cats are worth much less than stockers. Hopefully the thugs would recognize one before cutting.

Last scrap cat I took in I got $56 and it was off a wussy little saturn.

I'm guessing the thief had a very specific "market" in mind: his own car. Else I'd expect them to not only pick an easier target, but to be a bit more thorough and break into the car as well.

I'm not exactly sure how lease laws are in MI, but you should look into perhaps taking them to small claims if there are other things going on within your community that you can prove in court or if they aren't maintaining your (I'm assuming) apartment unit. At least that way you can get out of your lease without it impacting your credit. Paying the cost of court is well worth it versus that mark being on your credit for the next 7 years.

Catalytic converters can be worth a bit of money, especially the big ones off SUVs, trucks etc because of the precious metals inside (platinum, etc)

And this thief picked one of the smallest lowest value around. See any other cavaliers around? Get on the ground and look for new clamps or fresh welds. The thief definitely took it for his own car or someone he knows. You might just get lucky and find the [censored].

Two things. The thief probably had another cavalier in mind when he stole that cat.

Second, the only thing you can do is let the air out of your tires every night. That may not be an option if your concerned about shortened tire life and having to pump them back up every morning. Or - you can have a perimeter alarm installed on the car. I doubt they will hit the same one twice.

File a police report and request that they cruise your parking lot on a regular basis. You may have to have multiple people make multiple requests in order for the cops to cruise the complex.

If they took mine, I`d probably leave it off. It has no sensor after it on mine, so the ecm probably wouldnt know the difference.

I heard they are stealing them around here also. About your best bet is an alarm -- which will be less than $400. Or, sleep in your car with a baseball bat in hand.

Tht's starting to what I thinking too. I've been told by a few people that it is ot worth stealing for the effort. Sad part is that there are a few cavs around here..

Already got the police report filed...
