Tires for the beater van

We need to get 2 new tires on the old Quest, up in the back are a good pair of Goodyear Assurance TripleTreds and in the front are Michelin HydroEdges, one of which is shot because of bad alignment. The parents don't want to spend too much money on this even though ideally I would get 2 more TripleTreds. Costco has the Bridgestone Turanza EL400 and the BFGoodrich Premier Touring for a little under $250 for 2 installed. Big O can get me Yokohamas for $230. I can get Falkens for $200 at America's tire. I read not too great reviews on the Bridgestones over at Tire Rack. I was thinking of ordering the General Altimax RTs or the TripleTreds from Tire Rack and having my old boss at Honda put them on for me.

What should I do, guys?

I vote for the Falkens. Wife had a set on her vehicle and they gave good service. You may even find them for less than $200.00 if you shop around some.

I had the Falkens for years on the Legacy wagon, great tire-- very quiet and does not squeal under load. 30K miles and going strong.

Whatever tires you get, be sure you tell your parents you ain't checking out tires for them or getting them put on unless they also get an alignment. No sense putting new tires on a vehicle with a bad alignment.

The alignment's going to get fixed as well. The van never aligned right and Big O told me the driver's side knuckle could have been tweaked a bit from a curb hit years ago.

Which model is Yokohama ? AVID TRZ ?
Which model is Falken ? Sincera SN-828 ?

Of the two models above I would choose Yokohama AVID TRZ. But, if you can afford another pair TripleTreds it would be better to have matching front and rear tires.

Two other tires you may want to look at, if you don't want to spend the money for TripleTreds, are Hankook Optimo H727 and Yokohama AVID Touring-S.

Look for these tires at onlinetires.com, print out their price with local pickup in Cerritos if you're in So Cal, take it to America's Tire for price matching. Or find the lowest price (with shipping if applicable) online for price matching at America's Tire. If you do it right you can get a good pair of tire for the front for less than $200.

I think the Yokos in question are TRZs. The Falkens are definitely SN828s.

The best cheap(er) tire ever. I have them on the wife's car...they are holding up very well with nearly any wear after 10k...


I'd buy another set if they made them in my size still.

I called the local Goodyear shop and they can get me those for $230ish installed. They look strikingly similar to the Assurance ComfortTred. Just a few dollars less than the no-Integritys which make even a Prius dangerous to drive unless you have traction control.
