Tires at BJs

Consumer Reports had the Michelin Defender 2 as the best tire for the money for SUV/CUV. Meaning lowest cost per tire mile.

Getting Crosstrek a set of 4 for $850. Mounted and balanced. DE has no sales tax. But a $10 fee for something. Saved $80 off tire price and installation was free.

And lifetime tire repair and rotation and balancing. Which saves another $100 -$200 at least over life of the tire.

Our trusted Indie mechanic said the tires from factory had dry rot so time for new tires (since it's for the wife). I think they were made in Thailand and a brand I cannot remember and never heard of.

BJ’s is where I have been purchasing my tires for over 10 years. You will like the Michelin Defenders they will last a very long time, I put a set on the wife’s RAV4 a few years ago. That is what I am planning to put on my Maverick next year.

The $10 might have been a tire tax charged a flat fee per tire (not by percentage of price like sales tax would be), in your case 2.50 per tire.

What balancing equipment do they have? Hunter Road Force equipment?

Do you have any recollection of the manufacture or installed date on the old tires?

The point is BJs seems to be a pretty good place to buy tires. At least right now and for a set of 4.

I have previously ordered Discount Tire Direct or Tire Rack. Tire Rack is $880 for the 4 tires. Plus installation somewhere and doubt you will get free tire rotation and balancing for life of the tire.

its pretty decent, sams and costco run similar sales, and DT will pricematch, including lifetime balance and rotation.

The old tires were Falken. They were what came on the car when we bought it new. I think fall 2020?? (During COVID19). No idea of the tire manufacturing date.

BJs looked to have the standard tire balancing machine.

I was told that the Hunter Road Force balancing is really only needed for low profile tires. These were standard 225/55 R18 tires. A lot of Ford dealers have Hunter Road Force balancing equipment. I had tires on my F250 balanced on a Hunter Road Force machine. Trying to get the ride better. But with a solid front axle nothing much will get it beyond an "acceptable ride". No way you will ever get a "smooth ride" in a pickup or Jeep with solid front axle.

Falkens can be ok, OE tire is more of an issue than the "brand"
They have a few standout tires, the wildpeak AT4W and Wildpeak AT Trail are well liked.
I had the ziex 950's and Azenis FK460 which were a decent performance tire back in the day.

Sumitomo owns Falken its not a little tire company.

Over all their tire types:
Michelins and Continentals can be better in my opinion.

I don't think I have a Discount Tire real store near me in Delaware. Or have not seen one while live here for several years.

No Costco (maybe in a year) and no Sam's. I have no allengence. I have bought at Sam's and Costco.

Sam's in NY no longer offers road hazard. They will honor it if tires were purchased in a different state and you happen to be in NY and have a problem. I emailed about it and checked online. Something with NY (maybe a lobby) and classifying it as a separate insurance policy.

Costco still offers 5 year road hazard with install. I haven't checked BJ's lately.

BJ's is 3 year or 36,000 miles for road hazard.

The issue is with Subaru symmetric AWD you need/want the tread depth of all 4 tires to be the same. So if after 25,000 miles you get a puncture on a sidewall that cannot be repaired and you get a new tire it should be cut down to match the other tires. Or get 4 new tires. I don't think BJ's has a machine to cut down the tire.
