Tire shop over torqued my wheels

Yes, if that is the value shown in your owner's manual. 140ft-lb sounds crazy high to me.
You don't own a torque wrench?
140 ft*lb is spec on my 1 ton truck

Last time I had tires done on our small car, I got all excited because I watched the tech put the nuts on by hand then lightly snug with impact. Then he put the car on the ground, set his torque wrench to the correct torque. Then he proceeded to put he full body weight into the handle AFTER the click. Easily an extra 1/4 turn on each one.

There's a reason I carry $15 harbor freight 30" breaker bars in each vehicle, plus a short extension and a few sockets - 19mm, 21mm, and in the truck, 7/8". I don't want to be on the side of the road with a factory lug wrench.

IF their wrenches are at all accurate or calibrated. I always set my Tekton to 5lbs over so I can feel what the correct torque is vs rely on the CCP to make a tool that's actually reliable.

I do not have my own torque wrench. It’s an expensive tool that I really don’t need since I don’t do anything on my car that involves removing the wheels.
Even an inexpensive Harbor Freight torque wrench is accurate enough for most tasks. Always good to have one if you are a car guy. Better yet a 3/8ths and a 1/2 inch drive.

Concur, the SK 3/8 drive will do 100ftlb lug nuts and it'll last the rest of your life. It is a good value in TQ wrenches.

Last fall/winter i had new tires put on my wrx. I specified the shop (talked to the 20 somethings doing the tires) torque to 89 ft lbs as per the manual.

Last month I changed my oil and rotated my tires. I could tell it was harder than normal to loosen the lug nuts. So I'm pretty sure they over torqued. Thankfully, no noticed damage. But the fear i have with the wrx is the weak oem studs they use. Ive already had to replace one with a much nicer aftermarket one.

140 is full size truck torque
no damage
Impact wrenches can get 200+ft/lb fast
140 isn't that bad

I'd still have it reset to 100

I always re-torque the lugs after a shop has taken wheels off. Mostly to make sure I can actually get the lugs off if I need to change a flat on the side of the road and partly so there's no warping happening.

I'd leave it
Too late. I went back and they confirmed that it was set to 140 lb ft (they misread the source that they looked up which said 140nm)

So they loosened them all off and then retorqued them to 100. I drove around for a bit and came back so they could double check and they were all still at 100, so it’s all good now 🤩

The shop I go to actually states on the invoice that the customer is responsible for checking the lug nut torque after driving X number of miles.
I check mine, and have a 40" long breaker bar to prove it! I need that to loosen them sometimes!
Tightening to 100 ft lbs, no problem.

I love it when they spin the lugs on with an air gun, then use the torque wrench afterward.
Um, I do this. Like probably 75%* of the other people who use an impact, we just spin them on until snug. Then we use the torque wrench. Am I doing it backwards?

*I suspect the other 25% just use the impact and don't bother with the torque wrench

That is the way it is supposed to work. When I worked at Sears they wanted us to use torque sticks and give them the beans. In training I was almost sent home because I pointed out to the trainer that getting the torque wrench to click without it turning didn't mean it was torqued properly, just at least whatever the setting was.

I found my lug nuts over tightened once when I got a flat tire and couldn't get any lug nuts off.
Now, I carry in my trunk, a battery jumper box that powers an impact wrench set (12VOLT) with each lug nut size. It is a little power house. With that, I'm ready for any dead battery or flat tire.

I just retorque them anytime someone else has touched them.

I then carry a 30" harbor freight breaker bar ($15) a 6" extension, and a harbor freight thick wall impact set ($15) in case I need to help other people. With 30" I can get the job done without sweating.
