Tire recommendations for 2005 Tahoe

I have had some Duratracs on my Tahoe for 8 months now and they’ve gotten pretty noisy. To be honest almost maddening. I know that’s the nature for this style A/T.

I am considering re-evaluating my tire needs and going to more of a highway tire. With that said, has anyone ran a Michelin LTX in snow? We do get decent snow here in the Buffalo area.

I know they’re not 3PMS certified. Should I look for that only?

Specifically looking at the Defender LTX M/S 2.

Any other recommendations. Kinda sick of noise and want some comfort. I do tow occasionally.
 
Duratracs are noisy, but probably the best general off road tire there is.

Michelin LTXAt2 are great, and BFG KO AT are great.

All of my vehicles have either one. The AT2 is a really aggressive highway tire. And the outside tread gets worn long before the inside, which I do not like. It has to do with the tread design and depth at various parts of the tire.

My go to is the BFG KO AT. As a general tire for on and off road usage and durability, in my own experience it is hard to beat, and looks great.

Defender LTX is a quiet tire, decent in snow.

I would grab some steel wheels and get a set of Bridgestone Dueler DM-Z2 winter tires for the season. Having owned both, the DM-Z2 defies laws of physics and has good traction even on ice. You don't even realize there's snow between the tire and road.

My Defender LTX M/S are good for my needs which is DD, beach, light gravel/mud to hunting, light towing. Quiet, wear well, good in rain.

Many people say very good in snow. Only couple times I tried them, they were OK IMO. No comparison to my Nokian and Conti winter tires that I normally run. Correct shoes/boots for correct seasons and purpose. All my winter tires are on separate rims, currently 16 sitting in shed. If winter snow/ice is a concern then address that. Mine work out cheaper than my insurance deductible as I have the tires at least 5 seasons and rims for as long as I own the vehicle. The stop and turn is more important than the go. For me it's an investment in safety for my family.

If you off-road a lot then a more dedicated AT type is a good choice.

You could get the Michelin and try them as they will fit most of your needs. If the snow is lacking, you can always get the winter tires on spare rims. Keep an eye on the forums/classifieds/FB Market place for rims. I haven't spent more than $300 for my spare rims for all 4 for each car. Many of them were factory alloy, some even came with good winter or summer tires.
 
I understand about the noise of the Duratracs, they are loud. However they are amazing in the snow, one of the best out there. I was on the fence when I ran the Michelin LTX, they are a very good every day tire and excellent for towing. Pretty good in snow for what they are, although they are definitely not a snow tire in any respect.
Forget about the BFG's. I know others have different experiences but it is truly awful in the snow, at least the dry snow we get here in Colorado. Maybe they are different in your lake effect snow.
It all depends on what you want out of a tire the most. Good luck in your search!

Get the Defenders LTX MS 2's
I'm currently on my 6th set
They normally go on sale in Sept/October

I bought a set of Michelin LTX ATs in 275/65R20 for a 2011 GMC. Never again.
In addition they were the factory tires in 265/70r18 on several HDs I drove at work.
Probably the worst tire Michelin sells.
 
The answer to this question on almost any vehicle is either Michelin, Bridgestone, or Continental. Yes there are other good brands out there but hard to go wrong with one of the above unless you are really looking for an inexpensive tire.
 
I’ve been reading though and researching a bit. I guess I should stay with ones that have a 3PMSF rating.

Kinda interested in the Vredstein Pinza AT. It would be a departure for me by buying a lower tiered tire brand. Hmmm…
 
We have Nexen Roadian A/Ts on my Wife's Armada, working on our second set we like them so much.

We bought it new, came with Michelins that lasted 33K with 6K rotation and balances. Got 75k out of the set of Rodian A/Ts and they never developed any road noise, you would have no idea ATs were on it from inside.

What size?

Very happy with the Continental TerrainContact A/T's that I put on the Grand Cherokee. 36k miles later, they're starting to have a little hum at 5/32" tread. The Coopers I had before were deafening their whole life.
