Local NAPA dealer has a timing belt kit, guess it has the belt and tensioner? Would you buy the kit or would you buy better belts/tensioner separately? I get a good deal there, the kit costs me 150. I am more concerned with getting quality though, I want it to last.

I was also going to replace the water pump.

While it is all off, is there anything else I should change? I don't mind spending a few bucks if it will last another 100k.

Back when I had my '02 ES300 (same 1MZ-FE engine), I replaced the belt, tensioner, cam seals, water pump, spark plugs, filters and PCV valve when I did this service. Also replaced the radiator cap, hoses, thermostat and did a full coolant flush with Toyota Premixed Red coolant.

I'm not familiar with who NAPA's source is for parts, but with a service like this I would go with highly reputable brand name parts. I personally went with OE.

I would agree on the oem parts for the timing belts and related parts.

Its cheaper to buy the kit instead of the seperate parts. Napa timing belts are made by Gates. Quality stuff. I used their timing kit on my Accord.

every belt i have every bought from napa is a gates with the # 25 added to the gates part #. mike

I just called Toyota and he said I have a chain if it is 4 cyl. Belt if 6. Chain is lifetime he noted. He said a pump is 150 bucks, would you go OEM on that or could I get that from NAPA?

You gotta make the effort to determine if yours is the 2.4L 2AZFE engine or the 2.2L 5SFE engine?

If yours is the 2AZFE then you are on chain so no need to replace/service it; if yours is the 2.2L 5SFE engine, then yeah, t-belt, water pump and all the associated tensioner bearings, etc.

I wouldn't count on that if the owner's manual say otherwise (60-90k). I've had some pretty thin Mitsuboshi timing belt (made in Singapore) that are no where close to the OEM Mitsuboshi that it replace, or the Gates that fits just as good as OEM.

A kit is smart. Changing the pulley is a great idea.
Bad pulleys cause belts to go, not the other way around!

Anything else? Sure. Make sure your cam and crank gears are cleaned off. They will seat is a slightly different area with the new belt. Any light film or debris should be cleaned off.

And how about that front crank seal? Easy to get to now, and $10. If it is leaking or dripping, now is a good time to get it!

Just looked it up...it has a chain.

So I will leave that but would you change the water pump or let'er go?

not unless you have a leak on your water pump.

p.s. you can get Aisin (Toyota OE) from Rock Auto for 2AZFE.

(bought mine from rock auto a while back, and I'm keeping it as a spare).

For chain engine the pump is usually driven by the accessory or serpentine belt, I'd wait till the pump is leaking before I replace it, since popping the accessory or serpentine belt is relatively straight forward.

I just read in the other forum where NAPA kit for Honda Odyssey came with a bad water pump necessitating the mechanic to redo the job.

For my own peace of mind anything behind the timing belt cover the pump, tensioner, idler, belt is getting replaced with OEM.
A failure in this area could be just to destructive to risk on after market parts.

One exception is replacement parts that have been specially redesigned by a top shelf manufacturer to address a specific OEM part shortcoming.

A chain? Yeah - leave it alone.
If the water pump is separate, leave it alone if it is not leaking.
WPs are funny. They can last a long time.
I just saw one with a full 1/2-3/4 play at the fan [old V8] , and it did not leak!
