I have always used Rislone oil treatment in all my oil changes,@3,500mi. I used to be able to buy it for $6.00 a gal. but now only quarts are available and Bars Leak Inc., who now owns Rislone sells quarts at $6.00+ a quart!! So no more Rislone for me *&^%$#!! I have been a religious GTX 10w30 user. Havoline now has an oil that they’re marketing w/Slick50 in it. Has there been any news on this oil, any reading that exists that I could view, or any comments regarding this oil? I really don’t like the idea of switching from Castrol to Havoline but I feel naked without my Rislone….[censored] Bars Leak!! Any ideas on alternative solutions to this problem. The vehicle is a 2500hd Ram 2002 5.9l gas. I've got 94k on it and she burns a qrt. between changes. I tried 10w30 Syntec Blend but found w/the Syntec Blend I was using almost 2qts. every 3,500mi. Is the Syntec Blend the answer to the missing Rislone or…? Thanks for any help, comments or info offered.

What is in the Rislone that the Syntech will be the missing answer for. Go back to the GTX and see what happens . Engines last a really long time without Rislone, whatever it is supposed to do.

Where did you see Havoline with Slick 50 in it? Never heard of that before.

Agree, just use your GTX and forget about any additional additives.

Quaker State has Slick 50 in it, not Havoline. I think that may be the confusion. Havoline High Mileage and Quaker State High Mileage are both in red bottles.

Oil additives are generally unneccessary.

Well I admit that GTX is probably the best oil. I also stand corrected that it is Quaker State that contains the Slick50 not Havoline, sorry for the confusion. The only reason I've used Rislone for all these years.....is habit. From age 16 to 50 I've only had one engine drop dead w/less than 200,000mi so I've always attributed that fact to Rislone, thats been the only constant. Many different oil brands over they years, but the last ten or so have been Castrol GTX. I know very little about the differences in brand oil I really should read more but time is never really a affordable option with two boys in everything! Thanks for the advice and info

In the summer try a straight 30 weight. That MAY slow down your consumption rate. Speaking of Rislone, my uncle used to have a '57 Chevy for which a guy built a custom 301 cu. inch engine. My uncle used to routinely spin it to 8,000 rpms and the builder would only stand behind the engine as long as my uncle used a quart of Rislone in her every oil change. Dunno why?

If Rislone is group III synthetic 20 weight with a light dose of anti-wear additives, you could substitute with a quart of Wallmart Supertec Synthetic 10w-30 because the description is similar.

Also, you can't go wrong with Castrol GTX, it resists shearing very well.

Im also among the group who says, save the $$$ and just use oil.
Your consumption may taper off a little, or you can just live with it, keeping the oil topped off inbetween oil changes.

GTX/Havoline?? Doesnt matter. If youre happy, why not just keep using GTX??

Why not go to the GTX High Mileage Oil and see if that doesn't knock your oil consumption issue down. I don't know of a single vehicle mfg who doesn't flat out state "don't use additives in your oil". The Rislone may have been great 40 years ago, but is a total relic given the quality of modern lubrication technology.

MoparDJB,

Using Rislone is a mild engine flush and I would NOT use it expensively in your engine. All it'll do is strip the engine of the oil film inside your engine parts.

Better to just use your Castrol "Syntech" in the proper oil weight. Consult your manual for that info. The standard weight is usually 10W-30 but now a days it's more like 5w30.

In my 01' Dodge Durango 4.7 I haven't had any engine leaks in any way so I don't even use Bar Leaks.
