well, hmmph :)

The General Altimax is very good on wet/dry roads but not so good on snow/ice. Since you already bought the tires, just tell your wife to be very carefully when it is snow.

Review of a 2007 Honda Accord Sedan EX V6 owner with 62k miles on the tires:

"This is the second set of tires on my car. I currently have 62,000 miles on these tires and I will buy them again in about another 10,000 miles. They are the most dependable tire I have put on a car. I drive over 1,000 miles a week 75% interstate, 20% rural roads, 5% city/town. I live in a valley between 2 mountain ranges and these tires stick to the extremely curvy road when going over the mountains and will stop on a dime when a deer appears. They drive like a dream in the pouring rain at 60-65 mph. I have never felt like there was any need for hesitation. However, as good as they are for all-season, they are just as bad for the snow/ice. In slush - forget about it. Stay home. They do fairly well on black ice, as no tire does a great job on that. But for where I live snow/ice is an occasional occurance so the tire does well for me. A little leary to venture to far north during the winter months."

They might be alright. The reviews on the Contiprocontacts indicate they're lousy in snow - I've found them to be perfectly acceptable for an all season tire. Although the latest design has more sipes.

The previous generation of ContiExtremeContact was great on snow for me--I had them on my 1988 Merc Cougar RWD and I could pull away from BMW's with traction control (and pretty much anybody else, too).

I'm glad you picked a Ultra-High-Performance tire. UHP just means the tire does everything better, including panic stops!

My Mom rides on Altimax HP.

Super-premium performance at a modest price. As long as the dirver is not looking for extra sharp handling, I would not hesitate to put them on ANY car. They are definately better than average in snow. The directional/rotation/noise/complaint seems more theory than practice.

I would not say they are the ultimate in the wear department, but the trade-off is super-grippy in wet. A mild driver should experience good wear.

They seem ideal for your situation and car. No need to put hyper-expensive tires on for no good reason other than "peace of mind" or bragging rights. A lot of people end up with off-brand and others that are actually worse than the oem Michelins. You have something much better than them without getting ripped off.

As Koomba said, the panic stop in wet is the thing to optimse for as well as getting home ok in light snow.

Not the RE92, that's junk.

In our circle of family and friends, we have been very pleased with the Kumho Solus KR-21's. All whom have tried them have been satisfied with the ride quality, ease of balance, decent handling, and especially the price. If there is a size to fit your vehicle and high performance it's a must, these are a nice tire. These tires perform better than the price and speed rating suggust.

Otis, I sell tires here at my store in rural Wyoming. In your case, I would recommend the Kumho Solus KH16 in the size you want. Kumho is an excellent tire, and you will like them very much, particularly this one for what you are needing them for. Here in Wyoming where the snow and ice gets really nasty, these tires perform very well.

It's funny, now that I think about it. I started out in my uncles tire shop, and remember when Kumhos came out. Back then they were like the "step-child" brand. You almost couldn't give them away. Now, they totally rock.

Thanks for your input, we had the Altimax's i ordered put on today (i was working wife went in) I guess time will tell.

Yep, there are many good choices. Just like oil, it may come down to a slight brand preference. However, unlike oil there are also a lot of potentially bad choices with tires.

Tires are basicly the one custom thing most people will do to their car. Yes, do it right and spend the right amount of money. You could have been stuck with one of the worst tires, but instead got one of the best. Check back in later with a report on them.

Buying tires is much more difficult than buying oil, almost all dino of the same weight get you similar engine protection within mileage/time limit, and the same for over the counter synthetic.

Tires of the same size and same class (such as UHP Summer) may give much differences in noise, ride, handling, stopping distances, tread life ... Tire buyers need to know their priorities in buying new tires, are they looking for long tread life and low noise or are they looking for good handling on wet and dry ...

i wanted to give a initial impression on the Altimax's. its cold and wet ouside, most the snow has turned to slush/water. braking is good, wet traction from takeoff is very good, semi-aggressive cornering is spot on. I know this does not really count with brand new tires but my initial impression is a good one. after more miles are logged will report again.

Yes, another good choice in tires. People seem to like these tires for the same reasons your talking about. I have a set of Pirelli P4's on my '04 Altima 2.5 and love them for the same reasons that you mentioned about the Altimax. I should have looked into the Altimax for my Altima. LOL!

I know, that's lame!

I know, I know.. too new this does not count but i just had to re-post about driving tonight, wifes accord has the 3.0 v-6 in it, i decided to rip it a up a bit tonight on the way to the mart.. so here goes, from a dead stop in pouring rain "standing water" i goosed the accord straight to 4500 RPM "redline starts at 6500" these tires didnt even start to break free !! running approx 45mph downhill i made a right hand turn and again goosed it hard mid appex, I felt extremely little if any slip "still in pouring rain" At 60mph i all but stood on the brakes, almost at full lock point, extremely fast breaking, no slipping.. and last but not least i found several small ponds to go through at around 50-55mph, NO PULLING at all, it tracked straight and true.. Im impressed. What i dont care for so much.. these tires are deffinately making more noise than the take off's and im deffinately feeling more road, bumps, ect. I can deffinately tell im on a much more sporty tire. overall for the bucks there great.

We have noticed this type of noise with our Kumho KR-21's a my Pirelli P4's. It's not noisy per say but, there is a sound comming from the tires as they dispell water. The particular noise comming from the tires sounds like a faint "ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ or JJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJ while the water is evacuating. No Lie! It's the least of out worries.
