Those Contis are the antithesis of this! That was my point. There are better alternatives for your stated criteria.
 
If you get the Conti Extremecontact DWS, you should inflate the tires about 2-6 PSI above the recommended pressure in the owner manual, because the tire is about 2-3 pounds lighter than most for having thinner sidewall. If you are buying tires online and have Walmart installs it, check out the price from this site: Onlinetires.com

When I need new tire for my '00 MB E430 early spring, I will get Conti Extremecontact DWS.
 
is this tire a "performance car tire" ? the reviews seemed to lead me to believe it was a exelent do it all tire.. whatever helps protect my family by providing good all year grip is what im after. please tell me the alternatives.
 
WOW, your right ! i didnt realize this till i got on Conti website.. thanks ! please tell me recomended alternatives for P-Car tires. to everyone else, thanks for the suggestions but can we keep them at the grocery getter leverl ? my wife does not need "performance tires" im looking for normal passenger car tires that last a long time and that excell in the wet/snow.

The problem you're dealing with is the tire size. It is more of a performance size. You're not going to find any regular passenger all season tires in that size.

The Michelins I pointed out would be excellent, but a bit pricey. Continental ContiProcontacts are decent tires; we put a set on my mom's Impala. They ride a bit stiffer then I like, but they handle well and she hasn't got stuck yet in this Blizzards we're having. I can get going in 6 inches of snow on steep hill without fail.
 
when i was on conti's site i was looking at those. they look alot more like what im after/and what im takeing off. they scream boaring and dependable... Perfect

i checked out the Michelins.. $170 is a little steep. but im chewing it over.. with these do you think your getting what you pay for or are you paying for some name ? I run there motorcycle tires the *pilot power 2CT'S* friggin awesome but ubber expensive. luckily i only use up a set every year or 2.

Just a note on speed ratings, I have a similar car that came with V rated tires, and I just changed them over to H rated and the difference is significant. Of course I can't be sure the whole difference is the speed rating, but the new tires are considerably softer and quieter than the old. If I had to do it again I'd debate and might pay the extra for V rated. I certainly wouldn't go any lower.


I had the ContiProContacts on an 03 Civic and I really liked them. I would have gotten them again, but for whatever reason the were very expensive for the Accord. IIRC, 60 apiece for the Civic, 90 for the HL and 120 for my Accord. The Bridgestones that came on my Accord were terrible. I just got BFG Advantage TA's for ~90 apiece and I really like them.

Best of luck, lots of good choices. If the Sams Club in your area is good, I'd recommend special ordering the BFG Advantages if they come in your size. Otherwise TireRack will have tons of options and I'm always happy with the service I get from them.

The Conti DWS or the Altimax HP depending on your budget. No need to go beyond that. Either one excels in wet/snow, which is what you want.

The Michelin oems are horrible, get rid of them asap.
 
My car came with the 215-50-17. If you want to find "cheaper" tires, look for a 225-45-17. This size will open up MANY more options for you and that size is more common and cheaper. If you have 7" rims, you can look for a 235-45-17 which may open up even more.
 
ok, both of these tires are performance tires if everything im reading is correct. thats what im reading. and when i say performance i mean lead foot looking for traction performance tires. I know i have a aggresive rim size "factory" but want to put on a grocery getter mind-set, long wearing good wet and snow weather (((touring))) type tread design.. this is what was pointed out above.. you think reguardless of the type-performance these tires are rated at, we will be most happy with them ?

Well, the DWS and the Altimax are directional I think, so that I would stay away from if you prefer a smooth quiet ride and long wear over traction.

The ContiProContacts would be Continental's non-directional grand touring tire, which I think might be a better fit.

Good advice here.

The DWS is a asymmetrical ultra high performance all season tire. It's going to be a better tire for summer high performance driving, with the ability to not kill you in snow. The Procontact is a grand touring all season tire. It will be better in snow and wet then the DWS. Look at the tread. It as way more siping and biting edges, and an 80,000 mile tread wear warranty. That is the more appropriate tire for this application, IMO.

Ultra High Performance tires are not only perform better at higher speed, they are also have quicker steering respond and specially shorter stopping distance on wet road. The DWS can stop from 50 mph a full 30 feet shorter than Kumho Ecsta LX Platinum, a very good all season tire, on wet road with the same car.

Tire Rack stopping distance 50-0 mph test results:

Note: Wet stopping distance of DWS is shorter than dry stopping, may be a typo ?

DWS performs much better than others in the test on wet road, but lack behind on dry surface. It also performs much better than others on snow too.

I like the General Altimax.

There was a huge thread on this tire a while back.

Some are made in Mexico and some are made in France.

I would just specify you want the French made tires.

Kinda like Michelins at half the price.


I would agree with this. I have these tires on my wife's SRX and my 530i. For an All-Season tire, especially for the price, it's a great tire! The SRX is AWD, but the tires have performed quite well in snow this winter. I took it out and was plowing through 10-12 inches of snow last week and today I drove it in during blizzard warnings (lots of lake effect). It's a very good option!

I ordered the Conti extreme contacts last night and after reviewing all this info, im on the phone right now changing this order to the ContiProContacts.. I agree this tire is a much better fit for our Honda 80,000mi tread guarantee touring "non directional" GT tire. I think this is going to better suit our needs. all opinions appreciated but set aside, i think anything is better than whats on it now so everything is a step up !
 
good choice on the ContiProContacts. As I said above, I have liked them on 2, soon to be 3, different cars (read different sizes). I hope that you get good service from them.
 
Well, i looked at the sizeing chart on Conti's site they dont make it in a 215/50/17 the next size that looked close to me was a 215/60/17 and im afraid that might rub.. i would prefer to stick with oem size on this car. SO after 45 min with a somewhat trusted local dealer i reverted back to the conti extreme grips or the altimax.. after some thought i decided to order the Altimax, its less coin and compairable. and most BITOG ers seem to favor them. so i will revisit this post after we have a few hundred miles on them and tell everyone what i think.
