Tick Upon Startup

Last Sunday I had my friend change the oil and filter in my F150 (Havoline 5W20 HM/NAPA GOLD #1516). The oil drained out was Castrol 0W40 along with a NAPA GOLD #1516 oil filter. The oil and filter had been in/on for almost a year/7K miles.
This morning, upon startup, there was a "TICK" sound. It was there and gone instantaneously. The last time my engine ever made a ticking sound was about 5-6 years ago. I put a PRO-SELECT oil filter on there. Upon startup, it sounded like a woodpecker on a street light!
I'm using the same oil filter on this OCI as was on the last OCI. Things that make you go "Hmmmmm.......!"

What is the start up temperature ?

What year , brand engine , is the car ? How many miles on the car ?

So NAPA Gold filter , same , same ?

Castrol out

Havoline in .

After a good visual inspection , I , personally would drop the filter and install an OEM filter . Then top it off . Start it up on a few days and see if the results have changed .

If still ticking on start up , Is the running / hot oil pressure and sound OK ? If so , , does the start up ticking bother you enough to dump the oil and go back to Castrol ? If so , then do so .

I agree. Drop that filter and put it in a plastic bag. Put on a different brand filter. Add a cup of oil. Start it up. If it still ticks, drain your oil into a clean container, and put 0w40 oil back in. See if the ticking goes away.

Just curious, what made you decide to drain a 40 wt oil, and put in a 20wt oil?

The ticking sound doesn't bother me because of it being so brief. Now, if it had sounded like that wood pecker on a street light, that would bother me.
I wasn't going to post it at first, but I got to thinking; same filter as before, different oil. Let's see what replies I get. I too was thinking along the same lines as the filter. I was thinking about installing a FU, but an FL-400S sounds better.
To be continued........

I knew someone that had a 2005 4.2v6 f150, used regular valvoline 5w20 until 150k when it began a very slight startup tick for two seconds. Recomended he use 5w30, never heard it again, sold it at 256k running fine. Now I see it at homes as a mowing service truck, used only the cheapest fram filter at walmart its whole life.

The Castrol 0W40 was some clearance oil I bought at WM. So, I just went with that. Then, I knew I had an OCI coming up, so I bought the new Havoline 6 qt. box. My engine holds 6 qts. and that just makes things so much easier. When it comes to oil I am not biased.

My Santa Fe had some start-up rattle (not a chain system) and minor lifting tick in the cold weather from about 2 years old until it died 300K miles later with a snapped camshaft. I've also heard plenty of vehicles exhibit noise on start-up for a few seconds to a minute and they lived normal lives. I wouldn't panic over it but I would see if you can eliminate it if at all possible. I would try a different filter (like an OEM) first and if that doesn't work try different oil.

My Santa Fe was picky on oil filters and the only ones that seemed to work were the Hyundai and Amsoil EAO. Fram and other names caused persistent ticking.

When I bought the truck new (6 miles) I ran 5W20 in it until the warranty was up. Then, I would run 5W30 in it about 90% of the time, until I ran some 0W40 in it. When I bought the Havoline HM 5W20, I wanted 5W30, but all they had was 5W20. So, I went with that.
I have to go to town next Monday (50+ miles away) for a Drs. appt. I'm going to stop at the MEGA WM and buy some 5W30 Havoline HM there. I know it WILL be in stock there. I'll just save it for my next OCI.
I just got off the phone with my cousin. He has an FL-400S filter on the shelf. I'm going over there to let him replace my filter. BBL.

Could be the filter, could be the oil. I'd do as suggested above, replace the filter and see how it does.

Then go back to the 0w-40.

After your long drive check if you still have the "tick" and if you can report back.

I've used and cut open (well, OK, 53' Stude did the cutting) several Napa Gold 1516s. I never had any issues with startup, and the C&Ps looked fine as well.

While unlikely, there could be an issue with the ADBV. Stick another filter on and see if the tick repeats; if not, C&P the filter since there may be something going on with it. If the tick repeats, it obviously wasn't the filter's fault.

The tick could have nothing to do what so ever with the lubrication and/or filter of the engine.

I'm confused by your opening statement.
Which oil filter ticked?.... Napa Gold or NAPA ProSelect?

Please keep in-mind that NAPA suppliers are changing. So your new stock may be old stock. (Or) your most recent change may be a new oil filter supplier.

I just recently went thru this with NAPA. Another member started a thread about a new oil filter offering for the Hyundai / Kia 2.4 engines. So off-I-went looking for it. One store had the old nitrile ADBV Pro Select and the next store I tried had the new silicone ADBV Pro Select. The guts on both filters were not identical either.

Just a heads-up.....

For Pro Select in 21334, it's Mann-Hummel, same as OEM. But the odd part?....... it's not exactly the same as my Hyundai OEM from Walmart. The guts are a little different.
That tells me Hyundai/Kia have custom-built their 2.4 oil filters.

The PRO-SELECT was installed on my engine a few years ago. That was the last time I recall my engine ticking, when it had the PS on it. Then, with the recent NG 1516 this AM.
My cousin installed a new FL-400S and a 1/2 qt. Pennzoil Conventional 5w30. Upon startup, no tick. But, it was still warm. In the morning, when I go to DG, I will listen very well! Hopefully I can cut the old filter open sometime this weekend.

If you can post fact with teardown information why a Ford Modular used in North America can not thrive on the recommended grade I'm all for it.
