Thumbing my nose at OPEC

Since my new Chrysler 300 is flex fuel I've decided I'm going to run nothing but E-85 in it, despite the hit in MPG I know I'm going to take. First fill earlier this week was E-85 and it runs a lot smoother on it than whatever the dealer/factory had in there.

As for oil, I think I'll use 5w30 NextGen. It meets GF-5 and I have no issues with creating usable base stocks from old motor oil.* So, between using E-85 and NextGen, I'll be doing what I can to tell OPEC to take a hike.

*I would like to know if the refining and hydrofinishing they do on the recycled oil yields Group II base stock. I'm surprised no one asked that question in the NextGen Q&A session.

I am not certain that you're thumbing your nose at anything...it takes nearly a gallon of diesel to make two gallons of ethanol...diesel that had to come from the oil that is both domestic and imported...

You would use the same proportion of domestic/import if you drove gasoline or diesel...but with E85, you will also manage to remove quite a bit of corn from the food supply, raising food prices...

You need to do your homework on domestic ethanol production. What you've written here is utter nonsense.

Good idea. More people should do the same. Personally I think domestically produce bio-diesel should be tax free. I see no reason why there can't be a domestic 87 octane product as well. Domestic Ethanol and domestic gasoline. Also taxed lower.

I wish I could run e- anything

That's about right. Considering that ethanol has half of the energy content per weight, that's about no net increase in energy.
One big agra scam.

Please school us!

The only way to beat OPEC is hybrid and electric cars or public transportation.

Depending on your needs and means, a smaller car (or hybrid) and a fully synthetic oil like Amsoil may have better proven your point.

What about those of use that live 30 miles from a decent town with no public transit to get supplies and electric cars mean more coal power....

Hey OM, you're back.

The presentations I have seen on re-refining show the oil to be a good GroupII oil.

I think most blenders such as Valvoline are using a 50/50 mix of re-refined oil and virgin base stocks for their nextgen-type oils.

I'll agree that CNG or propane is the way to go in the short term, but ethanol isn't bad either. Its brainwashed thinking to assume that selling ethanol as fuel is somehow more profitable then selling it as food.

Believe me, you get screwed over way more on food prices then on fuel prices any day. Its just nice to know that grain resources that normally have no use get a use.

No, the way it was implemented is.

Brazil doing nicely with it.

As long as Americans continue to drive "living rooms on wheels" (I can't take credit for that line. Read it here somewhere), OPEC will be the one's thumbing their noses at us. Driving vehicles that get better MPG's will do more than E85 gas, G-oil, or Nextgen oil. Now for the replies saying "You can't tell me what to drive". And this is true. But, if this country wants to be less dependent on foreign oil, driving Civics, Corollas, etc. is the way to do it. They can keep their SMART cars though.

LOL!!! Oh man that had me rolling on the floor. As Americans we are more dependent on other Petroleum products not just as a fuel oil.
